In Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, Governor Douye Diri and Professor Muhammad Ali Pate, Nigeria’s Minister of Health and Social Welfare, formally opened a cutting-edge distribution centre for Zipline, the biggest drone delivery and fast logistics company in the world.

The state’s dedication to creating a more efficient, independent, and robust healthcare system is demonstrated by this milestone, which is particularly important in light of the disruptions in international aid funding that jeopardize access to life-saving medical care in Nigeria and around the world. The distribution centre serves as Zipline’s operating centre, combining cutting-edge cold storage, warehousing, and inventory control to facilitate quick, on-demand medical delivery.

Zipline provides regular access to even the most remote areas of the state by serving hundreds of medical facilities and community delivery sites throughout its 38,000 sq km coverage area from this centre. More than 71,000 units of necessary medications and more than a million vaccine doses have been delivered by Zipline since it began operations in Bayelsa in 2023.

The company has also spearheaded several successful vaccination and health campaigns that have given hundreds of thousands of supplements and tablets to people throughout the state.

Based on this success, Zipline is growing its operations throughout the state, reaching 73 of the 83 wards and solidifying its position as a crucial collaborator in the federal and state government’s efforts to enhance healthcare results. Deliveries to hospitals, primary healthcare facilities, and drop locations within zero-dose clusters throughout the state are made easily and on-demand by Zipline’s autonomous drones, which can travel 200 km round-trip and function in any weather or terrain.

Continuing to improve emergency response, decrease stockouts, and fortify supply chains for all medical supplies, the distribution centre will remain essential.

Professor Muhammad Ali Pate, who spoke during the commissioning ceremony accessed by BrandSpur national news stories, emphasized the federal government’s dedication to using technology to improve access to healthcare across the country by saying. He said: “These developments are not merely structures; they reflect our shared commitment to providing quality healthcare services to Nigerians, regardless of their location. The integration of technology, such as the Zipline drone flight services, signifies a bold step toward innovative healthcare delivery.”

Bayelsa’s healthcare industry will be impacted by this relationship, Governor Douye Diri underlined: “The Zipline technology is a tailor-made response and solution to the obstacles to timely delivery of pharmaceutical supplies posed by the state’s unique riverine terrain. Through the use of drone technology, over twenty thousand zero-dose children have been vaccinated, ensuring a healthy start to life.”

According to Akin Oyediran, Zipline Nigeria’s Partnerships Executive, who commented on the launch: “As Nigeria continues to prioritise capacitating communities to meet citizens’ needs, Zipline is committed to working alongside government and local partners to ensure seamless integration of our technology to strengthen health systems around the country.”

Currently, Zipline runs 13 distribution centres throughout Africa. With 30 to 40 highly trained employees created per distribution centre and in-house training and certification for pharmacists, engineers, and technicians, the company’s activities on the continent are entirely run and staffed locally. Through local collaborations and infrastructure investments, Zipline has indirectly supported rural economic development in Africa while directly creating over 400 employment.

Building the capability of the local health system is another area in which Zipline has made large investments. A state program run by Zipline and financed by Gavi has empowered and equipped hundreds of community health workers living in zero-dose clusters to provide basic health care and vaccination services. Tens of thousands of youngsters who were previously unvaccinated now have complete immunization coverage as a result.

Beyond healthcare, Zipline’s real-time logistics technology might aid other vital industries like e-commerce and agriculture, which could boost economic growth, improve service delivery, and increase supply chain efficiency.
