U.S. President Donald Trump has stated that his nation will be offering affluent foreigners what he called a “gold card.” Trump claimed that in exchange for a $5 million charge, the gold card would grant a pathway to citizenship and allow affluent foreigners to reside and work in the United States.
During a press conference accessed by BrandSpur digital news platform in the Oval Office on Tuesday, the U.S. president made the news. He claimed that sales of the new visa, which is a more expensive version of the green card, would help create jobs and lower the national debt of the United States.
According to him: “We’re going to be selling a gold card. You have a green card, this is a gold card. We’re going to be putting a price on that card of about $5 million,”
The new card will be a route to highly prized US citizenship, said Trump, who has prioritised the deportation of millions of undocumented migrants during his second term. He said: “A lot of people are going to want to be in this country, and they’ll be able to work and provide jobs and build companies. It’ll be people with money.”
Furthering, he also stated that sales of the cards would begin in around two weeks. He said: “We’ll be able to sell maybe a million of these cards. We have it all worked out from a legal standpoint.”
All applicants for the new gold cards would undergo a rigorous screening process, according to him. When asked if affluent Russians could apply as well, Trump responded that it was possible. He stated: “Possibly. I know some Russian oligarchs that are very nice people. It’s possible. They’re not as wealthy as they used to be. I think they can. I think they can afford $5 million,” he added.
Since Moscow invaded Ukraine three years ago, several Russian oligarchs have been subject to Western sanctions. His abrupt initiation of war-ending talks with Russia has shocked European capitals, raising concerns that he would be willing to shortchange Ukraine.
Although it is not yet on the table, Trump told reporters that relaxing sanctions on Russia was feasible “at some point.”
Regarding the gold cards, US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick stated that “we can use that money to reduce our deficit” when he was standing next to Trump in the Oval Office.
Trump, who has a lengthy business history and has branded several hotels and casinos, even proposed that the new cards be named after him. He stated: “Somebody said, ‘Can we call it the Trump gold card?’ I said, ‘If it helps, use the name Trump.”
