The GSMA Board of Directors has named Ralph Mupita, the Group President and Chief Executive Officer of MTN Group, as its new Deputy Chair, to resume office immediately and continue until the end of 2026.

The announcement available to BrandSpur telecom and information news desk, which confirmed Mupita’s promotion to one of the most important positions in the global telecoms sector, was made via a statement posted on GSMA’s official website.

Mupita will help the GSMA Board and its Chair steer the organization’s strategic course. The GSMA is the global voice of mobile carriers and ICT companies. The worldwide mobile industry’s development and sustainability are largely attributed to the GSMA’s influence on standards, legislation, and projects.

This appointment is a major turning point for the African telecom sector as well as for MTN Group since Mupita’s leadership is anticipated to improve Africa’s representation in discussions about global digital governance. He has been in charge of MTN Group since 2020 and has been in charge of its growth throughout 19 African and Middle Eastern nations. To establish itself as a major participant in the developing digital economy, MTN has prioritised sustainability, digital innovation, and financial inclusion under his direction.

Continuing, GSMA’s choice to hire Mupita is in line with his experience in strategic leadership and corporate governance, especially when it comes to expanding mobile connections in underserved areas. Mupita’s new position coincides with significant changes in the global mobile industry, such as the rollout of 5G networks, heightened focus on data protection, and the drive for environmentally friendly digital infrastructure. It is anticipated that his observations would help to mould GSMA’s strategy in these crucial areas.

However, in a formal statement, MTN said it was proud to have Mupita on board and that it shows faith in the company’s leadership and contributions to the global mobile market.
