Google has rolled out an AI-driven inbox for Gmail, designed to help users manage emails more efficiently by highlighting priority messages and tasks. The update introduces smart tools such as task summaries, reminders, and AI-generated overviews, allowing users to stay on top of critical communications without getting lost in email clutter.
The new system sorts messages into two categories: one for urgent tasks, including upcoming deadlines or confirmation requests, and another for informational updates, such as bills, receipts, or delivery notifications. This structure aims to make it easier for users to act quickly on important emails while keeping track of less urgent items.
Gmail users can also leverage a new AI search feature, which answers questions by summarising relevant emails. For instance, users can ask about previous appointments, purchases, or service interactions and receive a clear, concise response generated from their own inbox.
In addition, Google has added Proofread, a writing assistance tool that suggests improvements for clarity, word choice, and conciseness. The feature is targeted at subscribers of Google AI Pro and Ultra and is designed to reduce dependence on external grammar and writing tools.
Previously premium features, including Suggested Replies, Help Me Write, and thread summarisation, are now available to all users. Together, these updates are intended to streamline the process of reading, responding to, and organising emails.
Google has emphasised that these AI functions are optional and that personal email data is processed securely without training Google’s broader AI models. The AI Inbox is currently being tested with a small group of users, with plans for a full rollout in multiple regions later this year.
With Gmail serving over 3 billion users monthly, these upgrades demonstrate Google’s push to make email more actionable and less overwhelming, transforming the platform into a proactive productivity tool rather than just a message repository.
