Apple has entered a strategic multi-year partnership with Google that will see the tech giant integrate Google’s Gemini artificial intelligence technology into its next generation of AI features, including the Siri voice assistant.
The agreement signals a major shift in Apple’s long-standing approach of building its core technologies internally, as the company moves to accelerate its artificial intelligence ambitions amid growing competition in the global AI race.
Both companies confirmed the deal on Monday, noting that Apple selected Google’s Gemini platform after an extensive evaluation process. According to the joint statement, Gemini was chosen for its advanced capabilities, scalability, and performance, which align with Apple’s vision for delivering more powerful and intuitive AI experiences across its devices.
The partnership is particularly significant given the history of rivalry between the two firms. Apple’s iOS and Google’s Android operating systems dominate the global smartphone market, making them long-time competitors. However, the companies have also maintained a profitable relationship for years, with Google paying billions of dollars annually to remain the default search engine on Apple devices.
Brandspur Brand News understands that the new AI collaboration builds on this existing relationship, while opening a new chapter in how Apple plans to compete with rivals such as Microsoft, OpenAI, Meta, and Amazon in the rapidly evolving AI landscape.
The move is a strong endorsement of Google’s AI capabilities. Dan Ives of Wedbush Securities described the partnership as a major validation for Google and a crucial step for Apple to regain momentum in artificial intelligence after recent delays and leadership changes within its AI division.
Apple has faced growing criticism over the slow rollout of advanced AI features, particularly around Siri. The company previously delayed the release of an improved version of its digital assistant and recently confirmed that the head of its AI team stepped down. The new partnership is widely seen as a move to fast-track Apple’s AI roadmap and deliver more competitive features to users.
Reports indicate that Apple explored other options before settling on Google, including discussions with OpenAI, Anthropic, and Perplexity. The decision to go with Gemini suggests Apple is prioritising reliability, scale, and proven performance as it prepares for the next phase of AI integration across iPhones, iPads, and other devices.
Despite the collaboration, Apple stressed that its in-house AI system, Apple Intelligence, will continue to operate at the device level, ensuring that privacy and data protection remain central to its user experience. The company reiterated its commitment to what it describes as industry-leading privacy standards, even as it partners externally to enhance performance.
Financial details of the agreement were not disclosed. However, the deal comes at a time when regulatory scrutiny remains high, particularly in the United States, where the Justice Department has challenged Google’s search agreement with Apple as part of an ongoing antitrust case. While a judge has allowed that arrangement to continue for now, the new AI partnership is expected to attract close attention from regulators.
As global competition in artificial intelligence intensifies, the Apple–Google alliance is set to reshape the AI landscape, combining Apple’s hardware ecosystem with Google’s AI infrastructure to deliver next-generation digital experiences.
