Anthropic Appoints Former Microsoft India Chief To Lead Bengaluru Expansion

Anthropic has announced the appointment of Irina Ghose, the former Managing Director of Microsoft India, to head its new operations in India as the AI startup prepares to open an office in Bengaluru.

Ghose, who spent 24 years at Microsoft across sectors including banking, healthcare, manufacturing, and public services, brings extensive corporate and government connections to Anthropic’s India strategy. She stepped down from Microsoft in December 2025 and joins Anthropic at a pivotal time for AI adoption in the country.

Brandspur Brand News reports that Ghose will focus on driving enterprise adoption of Claude, Anthropic’s AI platform, targeting organisations that require reliable, high-trust, mission-critical AI solutions. Her leadership comes as India becomes the company’s second-largest market, with daily usage heavily skewed towards professional and technical applications.

The move reflects Anthropic’s strategy to convert widespread usage into sustainable revenue, a challenge highlighted by competitors like OpenAI, which has invested heavily in local operations, including opening OpenAI India Private Limited in New Delhi and introducing low-cost or free access to ChatGPT Go. While downloads of Claude in India grew 48% year-on-year, consumer spending of $195,000 in September still lagged far behind U.S. revenues of $2.5 million.

Ahead of Ghose’s appointment, Anthropic’s CEO Dario Amodei visited India, meeting with business leaders and policymakers, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, to lay groundwork for partnerships and regulatory engagement. Discussions explored possible collaborations with major local players like Reliance Industries, which later partnered with Google to offer Gemini AI Pro to Jio subscribers. Anthropic is also negotiating with telecom operators, recognising their role as critical distribution channels for AI services across millions of users.

In her LinkedIn announcement, Ghose highlighted the potential of AI tools tailored to local languages and enterprise needs, particularly in sectors like education and healthcare, calling such solutions a “force multiplier” for organisational impact. She also confirmed that Anthropic is actively recruiting locally, with openings in enterprise sales, startup engagement, and partnerships.

The timing of Ghose’s onboarding coincides with the India AI Impact Summit 2026, set for February 19–20 in New Delhi. The event, billed as the first global AI summit in the Global South, will convene leaders from Google DeepMind, Adobe, Anthropic, and other tech firms to discuss deployment, regulation, and inclusive AI development.

While India has a vast pool of software talent and AI users, its homegrown ecosystem is still maturing, with few companies developing core AI systems at scale. Anthropic’s expansion strategy emphasises strong local leadership, strategic partnerships, and targeted pricing to capitalise on the country’s rapidly growing AI adoption while ensuring sustainable revenue growth.
