The Lagos State Internal Revenue Service (LIRS) has reminded all employers operating in Lagos State that the deadline for filing 2025 annual tax returns is January 31, 2026.

Dr. Ayodele Subair, executive chairman of LIRS, issued the directive on Thursday, stressing that compliance is mandated under the Nigeria Tax Administration Act 2025. Employers are required to submit comprehensive tax returns detailing all payments, salaries, and allowances to staff, as well as compensation paid to service providers, consultants, and vendors. Returns must also include evidence of taxes deducted and remitted to the relevant authorities.

Non-compliance, Dr. Subair warned, could attract statutory sanctions and administrative penalties under the new law. Section 14 of the Nigeria Tax Administration Act 2025 explicitly states that annual tax returns must be filed no later than January 31 each year, making it a mandatory legal obligation for all Lagos-based employers.

Brandspur Banking News Desk reports that LIRS has phased out manual submissions entirely. Employers are now required to file tax returns online via the LIRS eTax portal, which is available 24/7 and described by the agency as secure and user-friendly.

Dr. Subair also reminded employers to ensure that all employees’ Tax Identification Numbers (TINs) are accurately recorded. Businesses are encouraged to assist staff who do not yet have a TIN to generate one immediately to avoid delays in filing.

The LIRS chairman noted that timely and accurate tax reporting is not only a legal responsibility under the Nigerian Constitution but also an essential part of effective fiscal planning and revenue management, contributing to Lagos State’s long-term economic sustainability.

Employers and organisations are advised to prioritise compliance ahead of the January 31 deadline to avoid penalties and ensure smooth reporting for the 2025 financial year.
