Nigeria has emerged as one of the world’s fastest-growing adopters of artificial intelligence, recording usage levels that significantly exceed the global average and highlighting the country’s deepening digital transformation.
A new international study jointly conducted by Google and Ipsos shows that 88 per cent of Nigerian adults have engaged with AI-powered tools, placing the country far ahead of the global adoption rate of 62 per cent. The findings reflect Nigeria’s growing reliance on digital solutions for education, employment and entrepreneurship.
The report indicates a sharp year-on-year surge in AI usage among Nigerians, driven largely by chatbots and generative tools that simplify complex tasks, enhance productivity and open new economic pathways.
Brandspur Brand News reports that AI adoption in Nigeria is increasingly purpose-driven, with users deploying the technology as a problem-solving companion rather than an experimental novelty. The study shows that an overwhelming majority of Nigerians rely on AI to break down complex topics, support professional responsibilities and explore new income opportunities.
The data further reveals that more than nine in ten Nigerian adults use AI tools for work-related activities, while a significant proportion leverage the technology to evaluate career shifts or launch new business ideas — a rate nearly twice the global average. This trend underscores the role of AI as a catalyst for innovation and self-employment in Africa’s largest economy.
Public sentiment toward artificial intelligence in Nigeria also remains strongly positive. Most respondents believe AI is improving access to knowledge, particularly within higher education institutions, with universities and educators seen as the biggest beneficiaries of the technology’s rapid spread.
Unlike global trends where concerns around AI risks remain high, Nigerian users display notable confidence in the technology. A large majority express excitement about AI’s future potential, with optimism rising even higher among frequent users.
Technology analysts say Nigeria’s strong adoption rate positions the country as a key player in the global digital economy, with artificial intelligence increasingly shaping learning, productivity and economic participation. As AI tools become more accessible, Nigeria’s youthful, tech-savvy population appears poised to leverage the technology to accelerate growth and competitiveness.
