Google has announced the opening of applications for the 10th cohort of its Startups Accelerator Africa, reinforcing its growing focus on artificial intelligence and machine learning as drivers of innovation across the continent’s tech ecosystem.
The latest cohort targets Series A startups building AI-powered solutions designed to solve pressing challenges within African markets. The programme will run for 12 weeks in a hybrid format, combining virtual learning sessions with selected in-person engagements. Applications are open until March 18, 2026.
Selected startups will gain access to Google’s global technical expertise, including advanced product support, cloud resources and one-on-one mentorship from seasoned engineers, product leaders and industry specialists. Participants will also benefit from exposure to investors, partners and fellow founders, aimed at accelerating business growth and long-term sustainability.
Brandspur Brand News reports that Google’s renewed emphasis on artificial intelligence signals a strategic shift in how global technology companies view Africa, not merely as a consumer market, but as a growing centre for research-driven innovation and advanced technology development.
By prioritising AI and machine learning, the accelerator seeks to support founders working on solutions with strong real-world impact across sectors such as healthcare, infrastructure, enterprise systems, research and data intelligence. Google says the approach reflects the increasing maturity of Africa’s startup landscape and its capacity to deliver globally relevant technologies.
Since its launch in 2018, the Google for Startups Accelerator Africa has supported more than 180 startups from 17 African countries. Alumni companies have collectively raised over $350 million in funding and generated more than 3,700 direct jobs, underscoring the programme’s contribution to entrepreneurship, innovation and economic growth across the continent.
Commenting on the new cohort, Folarin Aiyegbusi, Head of Startup Ecosystem for Africa, said the accelerator is designed to help founders push the boundaries of innovation. According to him, the programme aims to nurture startups that combine experimentation, research and technology to build solutions tailored to African realities while remaining globally competitive.
Eligibility requirements include being a Series A startup, operating from Africa or developing Africa-focused products, and integrating AI as a core component of the business model. Interested founders are required to submit applications through the official Google Startups Accelerator Africa portal before the March 18 deadline.
The launch of the 10th cohort highlights Google’s long-term commitment to Africa’s digital future, particularly in deep-tech and AI-led innovation. Industry analysts say the move could further position African startups as contributors to global technology advancements, while strengthening local capacity in advanced digital skills and research.
As competition intensifies within Africa’s startup ecosystem, the latest Google accelerator cohort is expected to attract ambitious founders seeking to scale impact-driven, AI-powered solutions across local and international markets.
