38-Year-Old Centrist Rob Jetten Becomes Netherlands’ Youngest Prime Minister After Snap Election Victory

A new chapter has opened in Dutch politics as Rob Jetten, aged 38, was formally sworn in as Prime Minister of the Netherlands, becoming the youngest person to ever hold the office. His inauguration marks a decisive generational shift following months of political uncertainty.

Jetten, the leader of the centrist Democrats 66 party, took the oath of office on Monday before King Willem-Alexander, succeeding Dick Schoof, whose administration collapsed in mid-2025 and forced early parliamentary elections.

Brandspur Politics reports that Jetten emerged victorious in the October snap polls after narrowly defeating the far-right Party for Freedom, led by Geert Wilders. The election was triggered when the PVV withdrew from the governing alliance, bringing down what had been the most right-leaning government in the country’s history after just 11 months in office.

The new prime minister has assembled a coalition government led by his Democrats 66 party alongside the centre-right Christian Democratic Appeal and the liberal People’s Party for Freedom and Democracy. Together, the alliance controls 66 seats in parliament, leaving it short of a majority and reliant on cross-party support to pass key legislation.

Jetten’s government was formed in 117 days, significantly faster than the lengthy coalition talks that followed the previous election cycle. During the campaign, he positioned himself as a pro-European reformer, arguing that cooperation within the European bloc is essential for economic stability, security, and long-term growth.

In a joint policy document released earlier this year, the coalition pledged continued support for Ukraine and reaffirmed its commitment to meeting defence spending obligations under NATO. Jetten also signalled that his administration would prioritise democratic values, multilateralism, and renewed engagement at the heart of Europe.

With his swearing-in, the Netherlands enters a new political era defined by youthful leadership, coalition compromise, and a renewed centrist vision following years of polarised governance.
