Lagos Consumer Agency Warns Residents Against Fake Deals Expired Goods And Fraud Ahead Of Easter Season

The Lagos State Consumer Protection Agency has cautioned residents to be vigilant in their transactions as the Easter period approaches, warning that increased commercial activities may lead to a rise in consumer exploitation and unsafe market practices.

The agency advised consumers to remain alert during the festive season, noting that heightened demand often creates opportunities for fraudulent sales, misleading promotions, and the circulation of substandard or expired products.

Brandspur Politics reports that the warning comes as authorities prepare to intensify monitoring and enforcement operations across markets, shopping centres, and recreational venues within Lagos State to protect consumer rights during the holiday period.

According to the General Manager of the agency, Afolabi Solebo, consumers should take proactive steps to verify the authenticity and quality of goods before making purchases, especially in food, beverages, and pharmaceutical products where safety is critical.

He urged residents to carefully check expiry dates, avoid patronising unregistered or suspicious vendors, and insist on proper receipts and documentation for all transactions as a safeguard against disputes and fraud.

The agency also cautioned against falling for unrealistic promotional offers, advising consumers to critically assess deals that appear unusually attractive, as they may conceal hidden risks or deceptive terms.

In addition, Lagos residents were encouraged to exercise caution when engaging in online transactions, with recommendations to make payments only upon delivery and preferably through vendors with verifiable physical addresses within the state.

The agency reaffirmed its commitment to enforcing consumer protection laws, stating that it would step up surveillance and respond promptly to reports of violations across various retail and service points.

Consumers were also encouraged to report cases of unethical business practices through official communication channels to enable swift regulatory intervention and enforcement action where necessary.

Solebo emphasised that while consumers have fundamental rights, they also bear responsibilities to remain informed, cautious, and proactive in identifying and reporting suspicious activities in the marketplace.

The agency assured residents of its readiness to protect consumer interests throughout the Easter period and beyond, while also wishing Lagosians a safe and enjoyable celebration.
