Fela Kuti And Sade Adu Join 2026 Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame Class In Landmark Global Music Recognition

Nigerian music icons Fela Kuti and Sade Adu have been officially named among the inductees into the 2026 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame class, marking a major global recognition of their influence on contemporary music across multiple genres.

The announcement was made during a televised reveal on American Idol by Lionel Richie and Ryan Seacrest, unveiling a diverse lineup of international artists spanning rock, soul, hip-hop, jazz, and pop music.

This year’s inductee list includes global acts such as Phil Collins, Iron Maiden, Oasis, Wu-Tang Clan, Queen Latifah, and Celia Cruz, reflecting the Hall of Fame’s continued expansion of its recognition beyond traditional rock music.

Brandspur Entertainment News Desk reports that the 2026 selection followed a competitive nomination process involving 17 shortlisted artists, with nine nominees ultimately not making the final induction list.

Fela Kuti was honoured in the “Musical Influence” category for his pioneering role in creating Afrobeat, a genre that fused highlife, jazz, funk, and traditional African rhythms into a politically driven sound.

The Hall of Fame described him as a revolutionary musical voice whose work challenged injustice and shaped global perceptions of African music through powerful lyrical and instrumental expression.

Songs such as “Water No Get Enemy” and “Beasts of No Nation” were highlighted as key examples of his socially conscious and rhythmically complex body of work.

Despite repeated political persecution during his lifetime, Fela remained a vocal critic of military governance, and his influence continues to shape modern African artists, including contemporary global performers.

Sade Adu, lead singer of the band Sade, was inducted under the “Performer” category in recognition of her decades-long contribution to jazz-infused soul and R&B music.

Her debut album Diamond Life and subsequent releases such as Promise were cited as defining works that helped establish a timeless, minimalist sound characterised by emotional depth and vocal clarity.

The Hall of Fame noted that her music has influenced multiple generations of artists globally, including Beyoncé, Adele, and Drake, cementing her legacy as one of the most distinctive voices in modern music.

The induction ceremony is scheduled to take place on November 14 at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, with broadcast coverage planned across major international streaming and television platforms.

The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame continues to serve as a cultural institution recognising artists who have significantly shaped the evolution of popular music across global genres and generations.
