Netflix has disclosed that it paid $587 million in cash to acquire InterPositive, the artificial intelligence filmmaking startup co-founded by actor and filmmaker Ben Affleck, underscoring the streaming giant’s commitment to expanding the use of AI-powered production tools across its global content business.

The acquisition, first announced in March, had been disclosed without financial details. However, the latest regulatory filing confirms the value of the transaction, making it one of the most significant AI-focused acquisitions in the entertainment industry this year. The deal also strengthens Netflix’s investment in production technologies designed to improve filmmaking efficiency without replacing creative talent.

The acquisition comes as streaming platforms increasingly invest in artificial intelligence to reduce production costs, accelerate post-production workflows and enhance visual quality across films and television series. AI has become a major strategic focus for media companies seeking to streamline content creation while maintaining high production standards.

According to Brandspur Brand News, InterPositive develops AI-powered post-production software that assists filmmakers in addressing common production challenges, including missing footage, background replacement, lighting inconsistencies and other visual corrections that traditionally require extensive manual editing.

As part of the agreement, the entire InterPositive team has joined Netflix, while Ben Affleck has assumed the role of senior adviser to support the company’s evolving AI strategy for film and television production.

Affleck has consistently maintained that the company’s technology was designed to enhance filmmaking rather than replace human creativity, positioning AI as a tool that supports directors, editors and production teams in delivering better creative outcomes.

Netflix has also revealed that approximately 300 titles on its platform have already incorporated generative AI technologies during production or post-production, highlighting the growing role of artificial intelligence across its content pipeline.

The latest disclosure provides fresh insight into Netflix’s long-term strategy as competition among global streaming services increasingly extends beyond original programming to investments in artificial intelligence and production innovation.

Industry analysts say the acquisition reinforces the trend of major entertainment companies acquiring specialised AI firms instead of developing every technology internally, allowing them to accelerate deployment while gaining experienced engineering and creative teams.

The transaction also reflects broader momentum in the media sector, where AI tools are increasingly being adopted to improve editing, visual effects, localisation and production workflows, even as studios continue to emphasise that creative decision-making remains in human hands.

With the acquisition now completed, Netflix is expected to integrate InterPositive’s technology more deeply into its production ecosystem as it seeks to improve efficiency while expanding its catalogue of original films and series worldwide.
