Spain are world champions once again after defeating Argentina 1-0 in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final, ending a 16-year wait for football’s biggest prize with an extra-time victory at the New York New Jersey Stadium in the United States.
Substitute Ferran Torres scored the decisive goal in the 106th minute after Spain dominated possession and created numerous chances throughout the contest. The victory secured Spain’s second men’s FIFA World Cup title, adding to the trophy they won in South Africa in 2010.
The European champions controlled much of the final, limiting Argentina to very few attacking opportunities while maintaining their defensive solidity throughout the tournament. Spain conceded only one goal across the entire competition, underlining the balance between their attack and defence.
According to Brandspur Brand News, Spain captain Rodri, who was named the tournament’s best player, lifted the World Cup trophy after another commanding performance in midfield, capping an impressive campaign for Luis de la Fuente’s side.
Teenage sensation Lamine Yamal played a key role in Spain’s attacking play, while goalkeeper Unai Simón remained largely untested as Argentina struggled to impose themselves. Veteran captain Lionel Messi, playing what could be his final World Cup match, was unable to influence proceedings as Spain dictated the tempo from start to finish.
The final also marked the first FIFA World Cup to feature an extended Super Bowl-style halftime entertainment show, resulting in a significantly longer interval before play resumed.
Argentina’s hopes of forcing a penalty shootout suffered another setback when midfielder Enzo Fernández was sent off late in regulation time, leaving the South American side to play extra time with ten men.
Despite sustained pressure from Spain, Argentina’s defence held firm until Torres finally broke the deadlock in extra time with a clinical finish that ultimately settled the contest.
Spain’s triumph capped an outstanding tournament in which they overcame several top-ranked nations on their way to lifting the trophy. The victory also means Spain now hold both the men’s and women’s FIFA World Cup titles, following the women’s national team’s success in 2023.
The 2026 FIFA World Cup, jointly hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico, was the first edition to feature 48 teams and concluded with Spain reaffirming their place among international football’s most successful nations.
