The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has launched a nationwide enforcement exercise to remove alcoholic beverages packaged in sachets and polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles below 200 millilitres from circulation, intensifying the Federal Government’s implementation of the ban on the products.
The operation is being conducted simultaneously across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones and targets the production, importation, distribution and sale of sachet alcohol as well as alcoholic drinks packaged in PET bottles smaller than 200ml. The exercise forms part of regulatory efforts to ensure compliance with existing restrictions on the affected products.
The agency said the enforcement drive follows the shutdown of manufacturing facilities found to have breached the directive, Brandspur Banking News Desk reports. Authorities are expected to continue monitoring production and distribution channels to prevent banned alcoholic beverages from re-entering the market.
The nationwide mop-up exercise is aimed at strengthening regulatory compliance within Nigeria’s alcoholic beverage industry while supporting the Federal Government’s policy on alcohol packaging and public health. Manufacturers, distributors and retailers found violating the directive risk regulatory sanctions under applicable laws.
The latest enforcement marks another phase in NAFDAC’s broader campaign to improve product regulation, enhance consumer safety and ensure that only approved alcoholic beverage packaging remains available in the Nigerian market. The agency has urged stakeholders across the value chain to comply fully with the regulations as enforcement activities continue nationwide.
