Coronation Merchant Bank Appoints Obeahon Ohiwerei As New MD, CEO After CBN Approval

Coronation Merchant Bank has appointed Obeahon Ohiwerei as its new Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer following a no-objection approval from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), ushering in a new phase of leadership for the financial institution.

Ohiwerei succeeds Paul Abiagam, who led the bank through a period of strategic transformation that strengthened its capital position, enhanced corporate governance and improved operational performance while preparing the institution for its next stage of growth.

The leadership transition comes as Nigerian banks continue to strengthen governance and executive capacity in response to evolving regulatory requirements and growing competition within the financial services sector. Brandspur Banking News Desk reports that Ohiwerei brings more than 30 years of banking experience spanning corporate banking, financial markets, risk management and executive leadership.

His appointment is expected to support Coronation Merchant Bank’s long-term growth strategy as the lender seeks to expand its footprint across investment banking, treasury services, corporate finance and wealth management while delivering greater value to clients and shareholders.

With the CBN’s regulatory clearance secured, Ohiwerei is set to assume responsibility for driving the bank’s strategic priorities, building on the foundation established under his predecessor and positioning Coronation Merchant Bank for sustained growth in Nigeria’s evolving financial sector.
