Cristopher Nolan’s The Odyssey has recorded a blockbuster opening in Nigerian cinemas, earning more than N215 million during its first week and securing its place among the five highest-grossing Hollywood film openings ever recorded in the West African box office.
Figures released by the Cinema Exhibitors Association of Nigeria (CEAN) show the epic adventure generated N215.53 million between July 17 and July 23, 2026, outperforming most international releases in the region. The performance places the film behind only Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (N318.5 million), Avengers: Endgame (N304.9 million), Spider-Man: No Way Home (N245.5 million) and Avengers: Infinity War (N225 million).
The film opened with N40.08 million on Friday before climbing to N49.05 million on Saturday and N41.19 million on Sunday, delivering an opening weekend haul of N130.32 million. Brandspur Brand News reports that the weekend accounted for more than 60% of the movie’s total first-week earnings, highlighting strong audience demand immediately after release.
After its opening weekend, The Odyssey maintained steady momentum by earning N19.28 million on Monday, N19.99 million on Tuesday, N22.27 million on Wednesday and N23.67 million on Thursday. The results were recorded across 66 cinema locations, with 54 locations reporting figures on the final day of the tracking period.
Globally, the film has emerged as one of the standout cinema releases of 2026. Directed by Christopher Nolan, the production adapts Homer’s classic Greek epic and features an ensemble cast including Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Zendaya and Charlize Theron. Produced on an estimated $250 million budget, the movie was filmed entirely with IMAX 70mm cameras, reinforcing its appeal for premium cinema audiences.
Nigeria’s cinema industry has also continued to benefit from strong local productions. Call of My Life added N32.3 million in its tenth week to push its cumulative earnings beyond N800 million, strengthening its position among the country’s highest-grossing Nollywood releases. Meanwhile, The Return of Omotara Johnson earned N33.7 million during the same period, while Moana, Remi & Nneoma, Supergirl and Evil Dead Burn also maintained notable performances at the Nigerian box office.
