Vodacom Group, Amazon Web Services (AWS) and the University of Johannesburg (UJ) have launched the Vodacom AI Lab, a new initiative aimed at equipping postgraduate students with practical artificial intelligence skills through industry-focused research and real-world telecommunications projects.
The collaboration comes as demand for AI engineers, researchers and technical specialists continues to outpace supply across Africa. By combining academic training with hands-on experience, the partners aim to prepare graduates for careers in artificial intelligence while supporting innovation within the telecommunications sector.
The AI Lab will allow postgraduate students to work alongside university researchers and industry professionals on commercially relevant projects, Brandspur Brand News reports. Participants will apply AI technologies to challenges such as network optimisation, customer service improvement and data-driven decision-making, giving them exposure to practical applications beyond the classroom.
The initiative reflects a broader effort to strengthen Africa’s digital workforce by addressing the continent’s shortage of specialised AI talent. Rather than limiting AI education to theoretical instruction, the programme is designed to build technical expertise through collaboration between academia and industry.
