Apple has regained its position as the world’s most valuable publicly traded company after a rise in its share price lifted its market capitalisation to approximately $4.94 trillion, overtaking chipmaker Nvidia, whose valuation stood at about $4.83 trillion.
The latest milestone follows a more than one per cent increase in Apple’s stock price, extending the company’s strong performance in 2026. Shares of the iPhone maker have climbed more than 22 per cent since the start of the year, making Apple the best-performing member of the “Magnificent Seven” group of leading US technology companies.
Market analysts attribute Apple’s resurgence to growing investor confidence in the company’s disciplined approach to artificial intelligence spending. According to Brandspur Brand News, investors have increasingly favoured technology firms that have avoided aggressive capital expenditure on AI infrastructure while maintaining strong financial performance.
Unlike several of its competitors, Apple has reduced capital spending over the past three quarters, choosing a measured investment strategy as it expands its artificial intelligence capabilities. The approach contrasts with rivals such as Alphabet and Tesla, which have announced increased spending on AI infrastructure, robotics and autonomous vehicle projects. Both companies experienced pressure on their share prices following recent earnings updates.
Attention is now shifting to Apple’s upcoming quarterly earnings report, where investors are expected to assess the company’s progress in rolling out Apple Intelligence features across more devices while preserving profitability and controlling operating costs.
The technology sector is also preparing for earnings reports from Microsoft, Amazon and Meta, with analysts anticipating further announcements of higher AI-related investments as competition intensifies across the industry.
Apple’s return to the top of the global market capitalisation rankings also reflects a broader shift in investor sentiment away from companies leading the AI infrastructure boom and towards firms demonstrating stronger financial discipline and sustainable earnings growth.
Nvidia, whose shares have risen about seven per cent this year, had held the title of the world’s most valuable company since June after overtaking Microsoft. The semiconductor giant also became the first publicly traded company to surpass a $5 trillion market valuation.
The latest development comes ahead of a significant leadership transition at Apple. Chief Executive Officer Tim Cook is expected to step down from the role on September 1 to become Executive Chairman, with Senior Vice President of Hardware Engineering John Ternus set to assume the position of Chief Executive Officer.
