Nigeria has launched a National Digital Postcode System designed to give addressable buildings across the country unique digital identities and make locations easier to find.
The system, operated by the Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST), uses a Geographic Information System-enabled platform to identify locations through five levels: state, local government, district, area and individual building.
Each addressable building is assigned a unique alphanumeric digital postcode, creating a more structured way of identifying locations beyond the informal directions often used to describe addresses in many parts of Nigeria.
Brandspur Brand News reports that the new system could have practical implications for delivery companies, businesses, emergency services and individuals who regularly struggle to locate properties using conventional descriptions.
Rather than relying solely on landmarks, roadside businesses or verbal instructions, users can search for their postcode through the designated platform at postcode.gov.ng. The system is intended to provide a searchable digital reference for locations across the country.
For delivery businesses and e-commerce operators, more precise location information could make it easier to identify customers and reduce difficulties associated with finding properties. Emergency responders could also benefit from clearer location information when attempting to reach people who require assistance.
The system could equally help businesses organise customer addresses and improve the process of delivering goods and services to different parts of Nigeria.
The introduction of a building-level digital postcode represents a shift towards giving physical locations a more consistent digital identity. For Nigerians who have become accustomed to explaining their addresses through a chain of landmarks and directions, the objective is straightforward: making it easier for people and services to locate a specific building.
NIPOST is responsible for the system, with residents able to check their postcode through the national postcode platform.
