MTN-MIP Cohort 5 Fellows Explore Huawei 5G, Network Operations Facilities In Lagos

Fellows of the MTN Media Innovation Programme Cohort 5 have received first-hand exposure to the infrastructure and technologies powering Nigeria’s telecommunications industry during a tour of Huawei facilities in Lagos.

The visit, organised by MTN Nigeria in partnership with Huawei, formed part of the fellows’ practical learning programme at the School of Media and Communication, Pan-Atlantic University.

Brandspur Brand News reports that the fellows visited Huawei’s 5G Innovation Hub, where they were introduced to technologies covering smart cities, cloud services, power systems, routers and antenna designs, offering a closer look at the infrastructure behind modern digital services.

The demonstrations also highlighted how telecommunications companies are increasingly expanding beyond traditional connectivity into broader digital services and technology solutions.

The programme participants later visited Huawei’s Service Centre, which houses about 850 Network Operations Centre engineers supporting organisations across telecommunications, finance, power, transport and public service.

The centre operates around the clock across four shifts, monitoring network infrastructure, including MTN’s nationwide network. Its teams identify network problems, allocate resources for resolution and work to reduce service interruptions in line with international processes and Huawei’s global standards.

A dedicated DevOps team at the facility also customises monitoring systems according to clients’ requirements. The centre is ISO 27001 certified, while its personnel hold relevant security certifications.

The tour exposed the fellows to several emerging technologies, including Huawei Metavision 3D Video, which can create richer three dimensional video experiences and reduce production costs by converting conventional 2D content into 3D.

The fellows also heard about Huawei’s approach to adapting global technology to local requirements. The company said its partnership with MTN is aimed at bringing newer technology solutions to Nigerian users while addressing specific local needs.

For the media professionals taking part in the programme, the experience provided a closer understanding of the systems operating behind services that millions of Nigerians use daily.

The visit also drew attention to efforts to widen digital inclusion, including the production of lower cost mobile phones for Nigerians who may not be able to afford devices capable of supporting newer connectivity standards.

The Huawei facility tour is part of MTN-MIP’s broader immersive learning model, which gives media professionals practical exposure to developments across telecommunications, technology, business and Nigeria’s expanding digital ecosystem.
