Apple TV’s Widow’s Bay emerged as one of the biggest winners at the 78th Emmy Awards, taking home Outstanding Comedy Series and several acting and creative honours, while Matthew Rhys made television history with an unprecedented double victory at the ceremony.
The 2026 Emmys, which recognised the television shows and performers that made the strongest impact over the past year, also saw The Pitt retain its Outstanding Drama Series title. Noah Wyle won Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series for his performance in the series, while Rhea Seehorn claimed Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series for Pluribus.
The standout moment for Rhys came after he secured Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series for Widow’s Bay. He had earlier won Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series for Netflix’s The Beast in Me, making him the first actor to win two lead acting Emmys at the same ceremony, according to Brandspur Brand News.
Widow’s Bay also strengthened its position as the ceremony’s leading comedy success. Including its Creative Arts victories, the Apple TV production finished the awards season with a record 14 Emmys, underlining its strong performance across both major and technical categories.
The success added to an evening that also celebrated established television favourites and performers reaching significant career milestones. Jean Smart, one of the most recognisable names in television comedy, won Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series for Hacks, adding another Emmy to her collection.
In the limited series categories, DTF St. Louis took the Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series award, while Sally Field was among the performers recognised during the ceremony. The wins broadened the night’s recognition beyond the major comedy and drama races.
Reality and variety television also featured prominently among the winners. The Traitors secured Outstanding Reality Competition Program, while The Late Show with Stephen Colbert won the award for Outstanding Variety Series.
The results highlighted a competitive Emmy field spanning established productions, returning favourites and newer successes. While The Pitt maintained its dominance in the drama category, Widow’s Bay stood out for the breadth of its wins, particularly after its record-setting haul across the wider awards season.
For Rhys, however, the ceremony produced a particularly rare achievement. Winning two lead acting categories at the same Emmy ceremony, for two different productions, placed the actor in the history books and became one of the defining moments of the 2026 awards.
The 78th Emmy Awards ultimately recognised a broad range of television talent across comedy, drama, limited series, reality and variety programming, with Widow’s Bay, The Pitt and Rhys among the most notable names from this year’s ceremony.
