South Africans Report Higher Happiness Despite Rising Anxiety, YouGov Data Shows

South Africans are reporting higher levels of happiness despite a notable rise in anxiety, with new consumer data showing that more people are finding satisfaction in everyday life even as concerns about the future persist.

Data from YouGov Profiles+ South Africa shows that 79% of South Africans now describe themselves as happy with their lives, compared with 69% in 2021. Over the same period, however, the proportion who say they often feel anxious about their lives increased from 60% to 67%.

The findings, accessed through consumer insights agency KLA, suggest that happiness and anxiety are increasingly coexisting rather than cancelling each other out. Brandspur Brand News reports that the shift could have important implications for businesses seeking to understand changing consumer priorities across the South African market.

Rather than postponing enjoyment until circumstances improve, the data indicates that many consumers are placing greater value on experiences and activities that provide satisfaction in the present. Personal development, creativity, self expression and relationships are emerging as important sources of that sense of wellbeing.

A large majority, 82%, say they are trying to become better people, while 77% are looking for new ideas that inspire them. The same proportion believe the qualities that make them unique are also what make them beautiful. Meanwhile, 73% say they enjoy being creative and expressing themselves through their hobbies.

Confidence about the future has also edged upwards. About 74% of respondents say they feel confident and excited about what lies ahead, compared with 71% in 2021.

The figures around spontaneity offer another insight into changing attitudes. While 70% say they are not afraid of change and 69% describe themselves as spontaneous decision makers who follow their instincts, the proportion who say they enjoy taking risks has remained unchanged at 69% since 2021.

The pattern points towards a stronger preference for acting on immediate needs and experiences rather than necessarily taking greater risks. For consumers facing uncertainty, decisions that offer tangible satisfaction in the present may carry more appeal than distant rewards.

Relationships are also playing an increasingly important role. Family remains central, with 86% saying family comes before everything else, while 67% say family matters more to them than their careers, up from 65% in 2021.

Friendships, however, have gained considerable ground. The proportion of South Africans who say their friends matter more to them than their family rose from 20% in 2021 to 30% in 2026.

The data also shows that 61% are happy with their standard of living, compared with 58% five years earlier. For businesses and marketers, the figures point to consumers who may respond more strongly to products, services and experiences that deliver value and enjoyment in their everyday lives than messages centred solely on distant aspirations.

The latest YouGov Profiles+ dataset was collected on May 17, 2026, from a nationally representative sample of 20,543 people. The comparison data from 2021 was based on 5,777 respondents and was collected on May 16 of that year. KLA is YouGov’s exclusive authorised partner in Sub-Saharan Africa.
