Nigerian Firm Milsat Powers New National Digital Postcode System

Nigerian technology company Milsat Africa has been identified as the firm behind the technology powering Nigeria’s new National Digital Postcode, marking another major step in the country’s drive to develop home-grown digital infrastructure.

Founded by Taslim Saluadeen and Adedamola Baderinwa, Milsat moved from a pilot project delivered in 2023 to supporting the development of a national postcode system designed to strengthen location-based services across the country.

Brandspur Brand News reports that the company’s work demonstrates the capacity of Nigerian technology firms to develop infrastructure with applications across public services and the private sector, while creating opportunities for locally developed solutions to compete beyond Nigeria.

Milsat’s expertise extends beyond the postcode project. The company supported the National Population Commission in mapping more than 65 million properties ahead of Nigeria’s first digital census, providing location and mapping capabilities for one of the country’s most significant data-collection exercises.

Its technology has also been deployed outside Nigeria, with Milsat providing enumeration area demarcation technology in Sierra Leone. The international deployment offers evidence of the company’s growing reach in the wider African technology market.

The National Digital Postcode project is expected to have practical implications for how locations are identified and used across public and commercial services. More reliable location data can support businesses and institutions that depend on accurate addresses and geographic information when delivering services or planning operations.

The project also brings together several organisations. The Nigeria Postal Service, Meeds Network Limited and the National Population Commission were acknowledged for their respective contributions to the development of the system.

For Milsat, the postcode project represents a progression from testing its technology through a 2023 pilot to contributing to infrastructure intended for national use. It also places a Nigerian technology company at the centre of an initiative with potential applications across government services, businesses and economic activity.

The company’s work in Nigeria, alongside its mapping and field-data deployment in Sierra Leone, highlights an emerging opportunity for local technology firms to develop solutions around African challenges and subsequently take those capabilities into other markets.
