NIBSS Deploys New Payment Platform to Expand Nigeria’s Digital Transactions

Nigeria’s payment infrastructure is set for another technological development as the Nigeria Inter-Bank Settlement System (NIBSS) rolls out its National Payment Stack (NPS), an instant payments platform built using Transactility’s jPOS technology.

The platform is designed to support instant bank transfers, QR code payments, phone number-based transactions and bulk payments, expanding the range of digital payment services it can accommodate.

The deployment combines NIBSS’ engineering capabilities with jPOS, an open-source payment technology that gives the operator greater control over the platform’s development and the flexibility to adapt it to changing market requirements.

According to Brandspur Banking News Desk, the rollout represents another step in the development of Nigeria’s digital payment infrastructure, as financial transactions increasingly rely on electronic channels.

The NPS is designed to accommodate different payment methods within a single platform, including transactions initiated through QR codes and phone numbers. These capabilities could support a wider range of payment experiences for individuals and businesses, although the announcement does not specify when each service will become available or how its rollout will be implemented.

NIBSS operates key components of Nigeria’s interbank payment infrastructure, connecting financial institutions and supporting electronic transactions across the banking system.

The introduction of the National Payment Stack adds another layer to the country’s payment technology landscape. Its longer-term significance will depend on implementation, adoption by participating institutions and the platform’s ability to meet the demands of Nigeria’s evolving digital economy.
