Alef Aeronautics Mocks Tesla Over Flying Car Race After Roadster Reveal

Alef Aeronautics has challenged Tesla’s position in the emerging flying car market, claiming it has spent 11 years developing the technology as Elon Musk’s company showcases its new Roadster.

The Silicon Valley startup shared a video of its electric Model A flying over a Tesla Roadster and Cybertruck, accompanied by a pointed message welcoming Tesla to what it described as a race it had pursued alone for more than a decade.

Alef also labelled the new Roadster the “second flying car in history”, turning Tesla’s unveiling into an opportunity to promote its own aircraft development.

Brandspur Brand News reports that the exchange highlights the differing approaches the two companies are taking towards vehicles capable of leaving the ground.

Alef’s Model A is designed to combine road travel with vertical take-off and landing, using multiple electric rotors to achieve flight. The company has also received a special airworthiness certificate from the US Federal Aviation Administration.

Tesla’s approach, as described in the supplied material, involves compressed-air technology intended to produce short bursts of lift for stunts rather than sustained flight.

The distinction raises an important question about what qualifies as a flying car: a road vehicle capable of sustained aerial travel or one that can briefly lift off the ground.

While Alef’s post takes a competitive swipe at Tesla, the two technologies have different stated capabilities. Tesla’s Roadster reveal alone does not establish that the vehicle can perform the same kind of flight as Alef’s Model A.

The exchange puts the spotlight on a developing automotive frontier where the challenge extends beyond electric propulsion to the engineering required to make road-and-air travel practical.
