Oil Prices Fall As OPEC+ Struggles For Consensus

Friday, July 2nd, 2021 – The OPEC+ meeting resulted in some unexpected 11th-hour drama, delaying a decision that was expected on Thursday. Oil prices slipped on the news.

But the outcome could still be a bullish one. The size of the proposed production increase was lower than most analysts had expected, coming in at an average monthly addition of 400,000 bpd, whereas expectations had been for 500,000 bpd. But there is also a possibility that OPEC+ might not add any barrels to production. The group meets again on Friday.

UAE delays decision. The UAE delayed a deal as it demanded a higher production quota. “Negotiations today will be difficult as OPEC+ knows that if the UAE is allowed to produce from a different base, other members may protest,” Rystad Energy said in a note.

With more businesses and organizations announcing strategies for hybrid work environments and students continuing to look at hybrid learning for the autumn, HP announced new commercial and consumer displays – the HP E24mv G4 Conferencing Monitor and the HP M27fd USB-C Monitor, both designed to address hybrid work and flexible learning environments.

“The way we work, learn, and play has forever changed. With more than 70% of people judging others based on audio and video quality, it’s no surprise that 50% of people want their conferencing equipment to make them look like themselves and help them sound more confident. People want to make personal connections, and technology that helps bridge the physical distance between team members and coworkers is critical.

The HP E24mv G4 FHD Conferencing Monitor is the world’s first Zoom certified monitor so users can expect a superb conferencing experience with technologies designed to work seamlessly with Zoom.

Rugby Africa Cup Kicks Off With African Countries

…Unions Eager To Secure A Spot In The Rugby World Cup 2023

With the Rugby Africa Cup kicking off on Saturday, African teams and unions are gearing up for entertaining competition as they travel through Africa to stand a chance to qualify for the 2023 Rugby World Cup in 2022.

With a number of countries and unions facing border closures due to the pandemic, Rugby Africa has been assisting a number of countries in traveling to match days, while adhering to local and host country processes and protocols.

With a collective effort to restart competitions, strict Covid-19 risk mitigations protocols have been communicated to all stakeholders in collaboration with unions.

The Rugby Africa Cup is an annual rugby union (https://bit.ly/362MTql) tournament involving African nations, organised by Rugby Africa (https://bit.ly/3jCgZJo). The tournament was first held in 2000 and has since been contested on an annual basis.

This year the top 14 teams based on the African ranking will compete in a single coordinated competition until the last two face each other in the final in 2022.

Starting with the Rugby Africa Cup Repechage which was hosted by the Burkina Faso Rugby Union in the capital Ouagadougou at the Stade 4 Août stadium, from the 5 – 13 June 2021, till the last game to be played in Kampala, Uganda on 18 July, a total of 27 matches will have been played. About 40 match officials from 11 African countries have been deployed from Rugby Africa across the continent to support the hosting unions’ workforce.

Speaking about the qualifying rounds Vice President Rugby Africa and President of the Rugby Committee, Andrew Owor explained: “The stakes could not be higher for our unions. The second round of the Rugby Africa Cup will be played across four pools of three teams each in July in three different venues, namely Kenya, Côte d’ivoire and Uganda, the fourth one remains to be confirmed. The top two teams of each pool will progress to the third and final round of the Rugby Africa Cup in 2022. An 8 teams knock-out tournament played with quarterfinals, semi-finals and a grand finale will see the winner qualify directly for RWC 2023 and the runner-up compete in a global repechage tournament.”

Initially Tunisia was also meant to host the tournament. However due to the rapid escalation of Covid-19 in the country, Rugby Africa is reviewing their viability and assessing options.

Rugby Africa President, Khaled Babbou applauded all unions in their massive preparation and effort to get their home teams ready.

“There has been huge commitment from all of our hosting countries – Burkina Faso, Kenya, Uganda and Côte d’Ivoire. We are extremely grateful to local authorities in making these tournament possible and availing resources to local and out of country games. We appreciate the efforts made by all match officials who are dedicating their time to support the tournaments. I would also like to thank APO Group, Société Générale and World Flair for partnering with us.”

Kenya will automatically qualify and also host the 2022 Junior World Rugby Trophy at the Nyayo National Stadium in Nairobi, where the Barthes U20 Trophy is currently being played with the Kenyan, Senegalese and Malagasy U20 teams.

It is also the occasion to launch the matches of the Rugby Africa Cup Women, Kenya will face Madagascar twice in Nairobi; Uganda will meet Zimbabwe twice in Kampala while matches between Tunisia, Ivory Coast and Senegal are once again under consideration. The Cameroonians had defeated their Burkinabe sisters twice in Ouagadougou on June 9 and 12.

With the announcement of the new Global W15 annual competition, women’s 15s is high on the agenda and Africa needs to fast-track the development of competitive women’s teams, says President of Women’s Rugby, Paula Lanco.

“The annual WXV competition, starting in 2023, will have three tiers and is aimed at raising competitiveness in the build-up to an expanded 16-team World Cup in 2025. The objective with the 2021 series of matches is to assess teams, give an opportunity to as many teams as possible to showcase their talent before an adequate competition format is designed for next year’s qualification to the W15 competition.

By establishing a unified international 15s calendar and introducing WXV we are creating a platform for the women’s international teams to compete in more consistent, competitive and sustainable competitions at regional and global level.”

Stanbic IBTC Nigeria PMI: New order growth quickens to 17month high in June

June data revealed a positive end to the first half of 2021 with a solid expansion recorded in the Nigerian private sector. Greater client demand in both domestic and international markets led to a sharp and accelerated rise in new orders. That said, output, purchasing and employment growth softened during the month.

Meanwhile, firms reduced their backlogs at the second most marked rate in the series. Sentiment regarding output in the year ahead was weak in the context of the historical average, but firms continued to foresee a rise in output by June 2022. On the price front, overall input price inflation was robust but eased to the softest since December 2020 despite a sharper rise in purchase costs.

The headline figure derived from the survey is the Purchasing Managers’ Index™ (PMI®). Readings above 50.0 signal an improvement in business conditions on the previous month, while readings below 50.0 show a deterioration.

At 53.6 in June, down from 54.4 in May, the headline PMI registered a solid rate of growth, but one which moderated from May’s nine-month peak. The latest uptick extended the period of expansion to 12 consecutive months, however. New order inflows rose strongly in June, with the pace of expansion quickening to the fastest since January 2020. Greater client demand was often mentioned by respondents.

International demand for Nigerian goods and services also increased, and at the fourth-quickest rate in the series. Although client demand rose at a sharp and accelerated pace, output growth moderated in June. The rate of expansion was still solid but posted below the long-run series average.

Sector data revealed services recorded the sharpest increase in activity followed by wholesale & retail and manufacturing respectively. Agriculture meanwhile registered a fractional rise. To support higher output, firms engaged in buying activity with growth now seen in each month since July 2020. Inventories also rose at a similar pace, though the rate of expansion softened in both.

Workforce numbers rose marginally in June, which coincided with only a slight rise in staff costs. Amid efforts to keep on top of an outstanding business, backlogs fell at the second most marked rate in the series, surpassed only by that seen in February.

On the price front, higher raw material costs underpinned a rise in purchase prices which quickened to a three-month high. Overall input prices rose sharply, though at the softest rate since December 2020. Higher prices were passed on to clients, with the rate of charge inflation robust overall.

Finally, firms remain optimistic about their output prospects over the year ahead, but the degree of positivity was far below the series average in June.
