Ugandan Remittances Decline But Still Are A Lifeline For Rural People

The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the global economy and job security for Ugandan migrant workers around the world has reduced the amount of money they are sending back home to their families.

But remittances still provide crucial support for some of the world’s poorest people.

Recent data from the May Migration and Development Brief shows that remittance flows to Uganda declined by 26 per cent, from US$1.4 billion in 2019 to US$1.1 billion in 2020. Yet despite the decline, Uganda was ranked among the top ten recipient countries in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA).

For millions of households that depend on remittances, the decline only underscores the role these private transfers of funds play in safeguarding their food security, health care, savings and investment opportunities.

Uganda’s mobile money service is one of the most integrated globally, especially for cross-border mobile money services. Existing services allow people to receive money from four countries in SSA and send it from wallet to wallet to six different countries in the region.

A recent study by the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), on remittances to Uganda highlights the fact that innovative solutions have the potential to increase access to and use of remittances received by households for greater financial inclusion and investment opportunities. The study also recommends specific actions to safeguard and recover from the COVID-19 crisis.

To help catalyse growth in the market, IFAD has launched a national call for proposals under its Platform for Remittances, Investment and Migrants’ Entrepreneurship (PRIME) Africa programme in collaboration with the European Union. The aim is to identify and support initiatives that reduce transaction costs, accelerate digitalization, leverage remittances to deepen financial inclusion and expand formal channels.

“While there has been a great transition to digital financial services, the key concern for Uganda remains to make money transfer safer, more secure and cost-effective,” said Tilda Nabbanja Acting Head of the Financial Inclusion division of the Bank of Uganda. “Greater financial literacy, innovations in service delivery and synergies among the development institutions, private and public sectors have to be built, in order to promote financial inclusion in the country.”

The average cost of sending money to Uganda remains high at 8.7 per cent, double the Sustainable Development Goal’s (SDG) recommended target of 3 per cent. But the pending National Payment Systems Act has the potential to achieve the set SDG target, create an enabling environment for digital financial and payment service providers, and increase competition and consumer protection.

“As all governments plan for recovery strategies, it is crucial to facilitate the contribution that 200 million migrants make to over 800 million family members around the world,” said Pedro De Vasconcelos, Manager of IFAD’s Financing Facility for Remittances.

“The opportunity for Uganda today is not only to make remittances cheaper as per the SDG target but also to make them count for the millions of families that receive them. That will give families greater financial options in their daily lives and ensure greater resilience, particularly in times of crisis,” he added.

NBC Mentors Youth On Entrepreneurship, Financial Literacy, Life Skills

The Nigerian Bottling Company Ltd (NBC) has reiterated its unwavering commitment towards empowering the nation’s youth, through programs that enable them to thrive and also contribute meaningfully to economic development.

The Manager, Sustainability & Community Affairs, Nigerian Bottling Company (NBC), Ifeoma Okoye reaffirmed this at the campus edition of the company’s Youth Empowered Programme tagged #DiscoverDevelopSucceed held on Tuesday, May 25, 2021, at the University of Lagos.

In her opening remarks which centered on intentional mentorship and bridging skills gap, Okoye noted that Youth Empowered is designed to set the youths on the right path to success by providing them with sustainable life and business skills. According to her, there is a gap between the skills that employers look out for, and the skills that many job seekers possess. This disparity, she said, makes it difficult for individuals to find jobs and for employers to find appropriately trained workers.

“At NBC, we are committed to empowering youths across the country with pieces of training that help to bridge this skillset gap.

The Nigerian edition of the Coca-Cola Hellenic Bottling Company (CCHBC) Youth Empowered, was launched in 2017. In its various forms ranging from the free online training platform, three-day workshops and one-day campus workshops, Youth Empowered has reached over 21,000 youths who are positively making an impact and building society.

GDP Is No Longer An Accurate Measure Of Growth, So What Can Take Its Place?

  • GDP is no longer an accurate measure of growth.
  • The World Economic Forum has created a holistic scorecard to guide policy-makers and government through the post-pandemic recovery.
  • Prosperity, the planet, people, and the role of institutions need to be balanced.
  • And trade-offs will be necessary as these metrics are intricately linked.

Why, in the 21st century, are we still measuring our economic growth with the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) – a metric created in the early 20th century?

And how can we define a more comprehensive, multidimensional metric that adequately reflects the complexities of the world we live in and that can guide our post-pandemic recovery? A metric that looks beyond a nation’s income and considers welfare, the environment and people, too?

The World Economic Forum has attempted just that with its report, Dashboard for a New Economy Towards a New Compass for the Post-COVID Recovery, which outlines a framework for macroeconomic metrics that could fill the gaps currently left by GDP.

GDP Is No Longer An Accurate Measure Of Growth, So What Can Take Its Place?-Brand Spur Nigeria

No Way To Gauge A Nation’s Welfare

The weaknesses of GDP as a metric are not just a reflection of the rapid transformation the world economy has seen in this century in the wake of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, the climate crisis and COVID-19. GDP’s blanket use for gauging a nation’s welfare has been questioned on many occasions, even by its inventor, the US economist Simon Kuznets.

In its new report, the Forum has proposed a scorecard made up of four dimensions that need to be brought into balance: prosperity, the planet, people and the role of institutions.

Prosperity Vs Economic Growth

The Forum’s ‘Prosperity’ metric includes aspects such as social mobility, income or wealth inequality and financial resilience. GDP still features within the Prosperity dimension but updated to reflect different dynamics within the world economy.

In high-income economies, it has to track the slowing economic growth, its impact on standards of living and increasingly unequal income distribution with a view to facilitating effective policy countermeasures.

In emerging markets, the metric needs to account for those countries’ more evenly spread growth, which has contributed to ending poverty for millions to date. There is still a strong case for boosting economic growth in these economies, the report states. One example of this could be stimuli to boost the growth of clean energy over fossil fuels.

Getting It Right For People And The Planet

The ‘Planet’ metric weaves together the evolving energy mix and, by association, the development of greenhouse gas emissions. It also accounts for the cost of climate change and its mitigation – for example through carbon taxes.

Human capital is the key determinator for the dashboard’s ‘People’ dimension. It incorporates metrics for tracking education and re-skilling to guide government spending toward transforming workforce skill-sets and avoiding job losses as the economy’s structural transformation continues to unfold.

The final dimension is ‘Institutions’, with the Forum pointing to a decline in institutional quality, as evidenced by negative trends around press freedom, judicial independence and budget transparency, for example.

Finding The Right Balance

While each of these four dimensions already carries inherent complexity, their interconnectedness creates further difficulties, and trade-offs will need to be made to ensure adequate balance.

While governments may introduce a carbon tax to help abate climate change, they need to consider the impact this may have on jobs, economic and social polarization, for example.

Finding a new globally acceptable tool to measure the ups and downs of our economic activity will remain a challenge – but one that must be tackled urgently to ensure the world’s economic recovery is on the right course.

Operator Messaging Revenue To Reach $88 Billion Globally By 2025

… Despite SMS Revenue Decline

A new Juniper Research study has found that global operator-led mobile messaging revenue will increase from $87 billion in 2020 to $88 billion in 2025.

However, the report found that SMS messaging, a long-established revenue source for operators, will fall from $66 billion in 2020 to $61 billion by 2025; owing to declining P2P traffic.

In response, the new research, Mobile Messaging: Future Outlook, Strategic Recommendations & Market Forecasts 2021-2025, predicts that operators will need to accelerate investment into rich media technologies to offset the loss of SMS revenue over the next 5 years.

It urges operators to capitalize on premium pricing and advanced anti-fraud standards over these messaging channels to accomplish this. The report assessed operator messaging services, including MMS, RCS, and SMS.

Rich Media Becomes Key for Operators’ Messaging Revenue

The report predicts that operators will take advantage of the growing interest in omnichannel strategies to foster increased investment in rich media messaging standards, including RCS and MMS.

The report urges messaging platforms to emulate the market in the US, where the country is anticipated to account for 54% of global MMS and RCS traffic globally by 2025. It highlighted the ability to message platforms in the US to offer a comprehensive portfolio of messaging products; enabling enterprises to leverage rich media messaging for high-value marketing use cases.

Conversely, low-cost services, such as SMS, can still be used for simple use cases, such as one-time passwords.

Messaging Revenue

Operators Must Authenticate Enterprises to Protect Messaging Revenue

Additionally, the ability of RCS to authenticate enterprises directly will provide more efficient anti-fraud detection and mitigation of mobile business messaging traffic over established SMS traffic analysis.

Research author Scarlett Woodford remarked: ‘Authenticating the source of messaging traffic via RCS is far more efficient at eliminating fraudulent traffic routes than traditional firewalls, however, RCS traffic must still be monitored for malicious and unwanted content. A failure to do so will diminish the value of rich media messaging services in the future.’

#IPOBSitAtHome: Petrol Sells At N300 Per Liter

Black marketers on major streets of Abakaliki cashed in on the sit-at-home order by the Proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) on Monday to make brisk business.

They sold the premium motor spirit, otherwise called petrol, for between N200 and N350 per litre, following the closure of fuel outlets in the city due to the IPOB order.

In separate interviews with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), a cross-section of the hawkers expressed happiness over the development.

Mr Chidi Onu, who said he “made good business”, frowned at the restriction on business activities by IPOB.

“Well, it is not my fault that these things are happening. It is high time we sat on a roundtable as citizens to discuss many issues affecting us as a nation.

“Yes, the IPOB order has favoured me. I only came out to sell and have something for my family,” Onu, who said he sold a liter for between N250 and N300, said.

Another hawker at Mile 50 Layout, Abakiliki, Mr Sunday Enyinna, said he sold a litre for between N200 a d N350, depending on the bargaining power of the buyer.

However, a tricycle operator, Mr Clement Chikaodiri, decried the development, describing it as wicked and sheer exploitation of the masses.

“It is worrisome. Look at me buying a litre of fuel for N300. That is too much. I have driven around the town and no filling station is open,” Chikaodiri said.

According to NAN reports that the high cost of petrol by the roadside hawkers resulted in sharp increase in transport fares by more than 100 per cent.

Brand Spur Nigeria recalls that the outlawed group, IPOB last Tuesday announced that the Biafra Day Sit-At-Home will hold on Monday, 31, 2021.

IPOB – founded in 2012 by diaspora-based pro-Biafra activist, Nnamdi Kanu – is canvassing for the sovereignty of the South and South-East regions of Nigeria.

Read IPOB Sit-At-Home Full Release Below:

“We, the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) ably led by our great and indomitable leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, wish to announce that this year’s Biafra Remembrance Day sit-at-home will now hold on Monday, May 31, and not Sunday, May 30 as earlier directed. The modification is following genuine observations about our earlier directive as many of our people observe Sundays as a day of worship.

“There will be partial observation of the Biafra Day on May 30th. But there will be a total lockdown and sit-at-home on Monday 31st of May.

“We, therefore, expect Biafrans all over the world to stay indoors on May 31 for the respect and honor of our fallen heroes and heroines who paid the supreme price for us to live. It is our right to remember them for defending the genocidal attacks given to our people between 1967 and 1970 by Fulani Jihadists supported by the British government.

“Consequently, all commercial activities must be shut down on 31st of May throughout the land of Biafra. There should be no vehicular movement on that day on Biafra roads. Transport companies must withdraw from the road on that day. National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW); National Associations of Road Transport Owners (NURTO); and others are expected to fully comply with this directive.

“In the same vein, artisans and traders must close shop on that day. Airports, Seaports, Banks and financial institutions should all shut down in honour of our fallen heroes and heroines.

“Okada and Tricycles organizations are also advised to withdraw from roads on that day. There shall be no social gatherings or events including burials, weddings on that day from 6 am to 6 pm.

“Parents are advised not to send their children to school on that day as no one is expected to be seen outside. Full compliance is expected from all.

“Biafrans in Diaspora are to hold peaceful rallies in their countries of abode”.
