WHO reveals leading causes of death and disability worldwide: 2000-2019

0

Noncommunicable diseases now make up 7 of the world’s top 10 causes of death, according to WHO’s 2019 Global Health Estimates, published today. This is an increase from 4 of the 10 leading causes in 2000. The new data cover the period from 2000 to 2019 inclusive.

The estimates reveal trends over the last 2 decades in mortality and morbidity caused by diseases and injuries. They clearly highlight the need for an intensified global focus on preventing and treating cardiovascular diseases, cancer, diabetes and chronic respiratory diseases, as well as tackling injuries, in all regions of the world, as set out in the agenda for the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

“These new estimates are another reminder that we need to rapidly step up prevention, diagnosis and treatment of non-communicable diseases,” said Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of WHO.

“They highlight the urgency of drastically improving primary health care equitably and holistically. Strong primary health care is clearly the foundation on which everything rests, from combatting non-communicable diseases to managing a global pandemic.”

Heart disease remains the number 1 killer; diabetes and dementia enter the top 10

Heart disease has remained the leading cause of death at the global level for the last 20 years. However, it is now killing more people than ever before. The number of deaths from heart disease increased by more than 2 million since 2000, to nearly 9 million in 2019. Heart disease now represents 16% of total deaths from all causes.

More than half of the 2 million additional deaths were in the WHO Western Pacific region. Conversely, the European region has seen a relative decline in heart disease, with deaths falling by 15% [1].

Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia are now among the top 10 causes of death worldwide, ranking 3rd in both the Americas and Europe in 2019. Women are disproportionally affected: globally, 65% of deaths from Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia are women.
Deaths from diabetes increased by 70% globally between 2000 and 2019, with an 80% rise in deaths among males. In the Eastern Mediterranean, deaths from diabetes have more than doubled and represent the greatest percentage increase of all WHO regions.

Global decline in deaths from communicable diseases, but still a major challenge in low- and middle-income countries

In 2019, pneumonia and other lower respiratory infections were the deadliest group of communicable diseases and together ranked as the fourth leading cause of death. However, compared to 2000, lower respiratory infections were claiming fewer lives than in the past, with the global number of deaths decreasing by nearly half a million.

This reduction is in line with a general global decline in the percentage of deaths caused by communicable diseases. For example, HIV/AIDS dropped from the 8th leading cause of death in 2000 to the 19th in 2019, reflecting the success of efforts to prevent infection, test for the virus and treat the disease over the last two decades.

While it remains the fourth leading cause of death in Africa, the number of deaths has dropped by more than half, falling from over 1 million in 2000 to 435 000 in 2019 in Africa.

Tuberculosis is also no longer in the global top 10, falling from 7th place in 2000 to thirteenth in 2019, with a 30% reduction in global deaths. Yet, it remains among the top 10 causes of deaths in the African and South-East Asian regions, where it is the 8th and 5th leading cause respectively. Africa saw an increase in tuberculosis mortality after 2000, though this has started to decline in the last few years.

The new estimates also emphasize the toll that communicable diseases still take in low-income countries: 6 of the top 10 causes of death in low-income countries are still communicable diseases, including malaria (6th), tuberculosis (8th) and HIV/AIDS (9th). Meanwhile, in recent years, WHO reports highlighting an overall concerning slow-down or plateauing of progress against infectious diseases like HIV, tuberculosis and malaria.

People are living longer – but with more disability

The estimates further confirm the growing trend for longevity: in 2019, people were living more than 6 years longer than in 2000, with a global average of more than 73 years in 2019 compared to nearly 67 in 2000. But on average, only 5 of those additional years were lived in good health.

Indeed, disability is on the rise. To a large extent, the diseases and health conditions that are causing the most deaths are those that are responsible for the greatest number of healthy life-years lost. Heart disease, diabetes, stroke, lung cancer and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease were collectively responsible for nearly 100 million additional healthy life-years lost in 2019 compared to 2000.

Injuries are another major cause of disability and death: there has been a significant rise in road traffic injuries in the African region since 2000, with an almost 50% increase in both death and healthy life-years lost. Similar but slightly smaller increases (at around 40%) were also observed for the Eastern Mediterranean region. Globally, deaths from road traffic injuries are 75% male.

In the Americas, drug use has emerged as a significant contributor to both disability and death. There was a nearly threefold increase in deaths from drug use disorders in the Americas between 2000 and 2019. This region is also the only one for which drug use disorder is a top 10 contributor to healthy life-years lost due to premature deaths and disability, while in all other regions, drug use does not make the top 25.

WHO’s Global Health Estimates present comprehensive, comparable and transparent time-series data for population health, including life expectancy, healthy life expectancy, mortality and morbidity, and burden of disease at global, regional and country levels disaggregated by age, sex and cause, from 2000 onwards.

“These estimates are produced using data from the best available sources from countries and the international community,” said Dr Bochen Cao, the technical lead for WHO’s Global Health Estimates. “They are based on robust scientific methods for the processing, synthesis and analysis of data. These updated estimates also benefited from the valuable contributions of WHO’s the Member States through active country consultation and dialogue.”

The availability of services to prevent, diagnose and treat disease is key to reducing death and disability, influencing where different conditions are ranked. These new estimates clearly indicate where additional investments in services are most urgently needed.

“Robust health data are critical to address inequalities, prioritize policies and allocate resources to prevent disability and save lives,” adds Dr Samira Asma, Assistant Director-General for the Division of Data, Analytics and Delivery for Impact at WHO. “The WHO Global Health Estimates are a powerful tool to maximize health and economic impact. We call upon governments and stakeholders to urgently invest in data and health information systems to support timely and effective decision-making.”

As of today, COVID-19 has tragically claimed more than 1.5 million lives. People living with pre-existing health conditions (such as heart disease, diabetes and respiratory conditions) are at higher risk of complications and death due to COVID-19.

Health authorities worldwide depend on timely, reliable and actionable data to make informed decisions – this is especially true during a global pandemic. The next update to these estimates will include an assessment of the direct and indirect impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on mortality and morbidity.

Nigerian Consumer Credit startup raises $1.5m from Y Combinator, others Brandspurng

CredPal started its journey in 2018 with a simple yet efficient solution, providing point-of-sale consumer credit for lower-to-middle income earners in Nigeria.

As part of its raise, the startup plans to expand its products and geographic reach.

“We’re building the American Express of Africa and our goal is to make credit cards mainstream across Africa as is obtainable in the United States and other advanced economies. Building on the success of its point-of-sale infrastructure, CredPal has maintained a stronghold in the consumer lending space and is rapidly growing, first with this funding and now the launch of its credit cards that are serving the needs of Nigerian customers.

Visa Partners Access Bank to Launch Business Debit Card for SMEs

Visa, the world leader in digital payments, has partnered with Access Bank Plc to introduce a Business Debit Card targeted at SMEs in Nigeria. This will create efficiency and transparency in SMEs’ expense management by preventing mismanagement, associated with handling cash.

Designed to improve SMEs, the business card comes with a higher spending limit which is in line with the spending patterns of small businesses. It will also provide these SMEs with access to discounts on logistic services and digital payment acceptance services. Discounts on Twitter Ads, Shopify, Microsoft Office 365, DocuSign, Regus office space, Udemy, and Dropbox will further be made available to these SMEs as well as more offers, which can be accessed using the business debit card on https://smeoffers.poshvine.com.

Access Bank is also offering free Google Ad Credits for the first set of small business entrepreneurs to sign up for the business card.

Speaking about the initiative Kemi Okusanya, Vice President, Visa West Africa, affirmed Visa’s role as a payment enabler and its continued efforts towards SMEs. She said,

“At Visa, we remain committed to championing, empowering, and equipping small businesses with the requisite tools necessary for growth. Over the past months, we have provided support to help SMEs transition online through our Where You Shop Matters initiative and we are happy to further provide them with digital payment solutions for easy and secure online transactions. Additionally, we have collaborated with Google to provide free access to digital selling and marketing training to all SMEs”

According to the 2020 PWC report on small businesses, SMEs contribute 48% of the national GDP, account for 96% of businesses, and 84% of employment in Nigeria. However, small businesses are mostly faced with cash flow management problems.

A state of Cashflow report stated that 61% of Small business owners don’t know exactly how much money their business spends each month. The new Visa business debit card will encourage the transition of small businesses from cash to digital payments and give SMEs better control of their expenditures.

Also speaking, Robert Giles, Group Head, Product Insights and Capabilities, Access bank said

“We recognise the huge role SME’s play in driving economic growth and, as the largest source of employment, contributing to social progress and stronger communities. We are pleased to have partnered with Visa to create this leading solution to help SMEs plan, budget and track spending as well as access services to aid business growth in an increasingly digital marketplace. We encourage SME’s to walk into any of our branches and walk out with the new Business Card in a couple of minutes to start enjoying the benefits instantly”

Over the years, Visa has continued to offer eCommerce solutions to empower SMEs. With its recent Where You Shop Matters initiative, the company has empowered thousands of SMEs across the country and provided online resources on how they can grow their business.

A holiday season like no others – a coviday

0
2020 has been a challenging year both financially and emotionally for consumers globally and in Africa. The pandemic has significantly disrupted consumer behaviour and shopping habits. It is not surprising that the year has been challenging for brands as well. As we are approaching December, brands are anxious to know how consumers will celebrate the holidays. Will consumers spend? where/when will they spend? is online shopping rising?

A holiday season like no others - a coviday Brandspurng

According to a recent poll by Kasi Insight conducted Nov 13-17 in Kenya, Ghana, Nigeria, South Africa and Tanzania, 97% of the respondents are planning to shop during the upcoming holiday. This finding is welcomed news for brands and marketers. On the other side, close to 50% of respondents say that their financial situation is moderately stable compared to 7% in very stable financial conditions ahead of the holidays.

Don’t bet on shopping online alone, in-store shopping is still at play

While online shopping has taken over in the mature markets such as Europe and North America, consumers in Africa are still shopping in-store but more are going online. The survey of 1303 consumers from Kenya, Nigeria, Ghana, South Africa and Tanzania shows that 51% of consumers cite in-store shopping while 41% cite some form of online shopping. Interesting, online shopping seems to be more popular in Nigeria and less popular in South Africa.

Shops such as Pick n Pay in South Africa have grabbed the opportunity. On Friday, November 13, South Africa’s biggest retailer launched an early online exclusive deal through its online shop. John Bradshaw, retail executive: marketing at Pick n Pay, said over the past seven months, the retailer’s online reported a 200% increase in active customers.

Bradshaw said they are anticipating greater demand this Black Friday as more customers have turned to online shopping during the lockdown.

Last year the retailer sold enough chicken to fill two Airbus A380s on Black Friday and they expect 2020 to be bigger due to the number of people using its digital platforms.

Apart from its online shop, Pick n Pay’s also said, it will for the first time open Click n Clock at all its hypermarkets in South Africa for customers to shop for big deals, such as televisions and appliances.

A holiday season like no others - a coviday Brandspurng

Celebrating the 2020 holidays on a shoestring budget = Coviday

Economists say widespread economic uncertainty has characterized most of 2020, a situation that has impacted traditional habits like holiday spending.

According to Adriaan Minnaar a Johannesburg independent economist and consultant traditionally, the holiday season is characterized by big sales, big crowds, and big profits.

“The festive season is the time when most retail stores experience strong sales. Projections are that this year’s spending will be less overall due to the economic uncertainty brought about by COVID-19 pandemic, Minnaar said.

Data from Kasi poll supports his assessment, in fact, the survey revealed that 87% of consumers will spend a different amount this year compared to last and only 4% of respondents said they planned on spending more than $450 this festive season.

The survey was conducted in Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa and Tanzania. 67% of those polled were males and 32% females.

Consumers are spending on essentials this year and prefer cash as a gift

COVID-19 pandemic has been a bad omen for the holiday season shopping binge in Africa. It is impacting every part of consumers’ lives, from the places they can go on the way they spend their time and spend their money.

According to Kasi Insight data, consumers plan to spend less on gifts and expect to receive cash and food. After nearly ten months of pandemic fatigue, Africa recently marked a new grim milestone in the COVID-19 pandemic. Nearly 50,000 are dead. The number of cases stands above 2 million, recoveries over 1.74 million, according to Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention. Two vaccines announced recently offer hope, but the consumer dark cloud still remains.

When it comes to items they will buy for the holiday, the majority of respondents is leaning towards essentials such as food (60%), drinks (48%). The survey also showed a shift in the types of gifts people will be expecting to receive and purchasing this year.

Despite the harsh economic conditions, 10% of shoppers said they are going to spend more, 37% saying they will spend less. Millennials are the biggest spenders, at 62%, 20% Gen X, 9% Baby Boomers and 8% Gen Z.

The survey showed that the majority, 65%, still plan to do most of their Christmas shopping in December. 14% said they are planning to shop during the week of Christmas,16% did in November and 2% in October.

The case for a good and affordable railway transport system

The Federal Government has approved charges on the new Lagos-Ibadan rail standard gauge which would begin full operations by January 2021.

The price is said to be an imitation of that being charged from Abuja to Kaduna. The price range goes from N3,000 per Economy seat, N5,000 for Business class and N6,000 for First class.

The case for a good and affordable railway transport system Brandspurng

The Railway transportation solution is a good idea that is expected to reduce the crowded road system and offer an alternative to road transportation and is probably faster in getting to your said destination.

However, the price seems like a punch delivered by a boxer to his opponent and the government being the boxer in this situation, while the people being the opponent would either face the boxer and receive the blow to the face or would avoid any confrontation by playing the no-stress game when the ring is filled with sweats and blood and just pay the price in order to avoid the horrors of traffic on the road.

One would have expected that maybe after a while the price of the train tickets might be lower but does anything concerning price ever get reduced in Nigeria? Maybe it would increase instead. The good thing about this solution is that when you need to beat the traffic and you have an urgent thing to do in Ibadan or Lagos then the train system is your sure bet.

The train system is supposed to help ease the stress of not just traffic while travelling between Ibadan and Lagos but also facilitate the decongestion of Lagos and it’s the environment. If the train system is affordable like it should be for the masses then more people can live in Ibadan and work in Lagos or the other way around.

Also, the train system can bring about an increase in trading between the two states as people can easily move around.

However, maintenance is one area our government seems to be lacking in and this problem is fuelled by a change in government. The new government mostly means the abandonment of projects or the need for new initiatives cancelling out the old ones and this also affects maintenance.

So what maintenance system is in place for the train system to be sustainable?
How can we ensure that the railway system remains in good shape no matter the change in government or policy that may surface?

Having a railway system is one thing, having one that is fully functional, affordable and sustainable is another thing. Let’s just hope that there are actions in place to ensure the railway transportation program is a success.
