A Rise In Female Leadership Will Trigger Newfound Economic Growth And Inclusion

The election of Her Excellency Francia Márquez as Colombia’s first Black Vice President is a testament to the increasing role women play in leadership positions globally, and both the international and African community should support her as she tackles her new role with drive, innovation and a people-centric approach.

While women’s participation in leadership roles globally has been minimal for centuries, a new wave of female leaders promise change, inclusion and overall equality. In June 2022, Colombia elected its first Black Female Vice President, H.E. Francia Márquez, an environmental activist who has emerged as a powerful spokesperson for black Colombians and various marginalized communities. With H.E. Márquez’ election, a new era of equality and inclusion awaits the country, and the African continent and diaspora as well as the international community needs to rally their support, both of her and other female leaders around the world.

Driving Equality

For her part, H.E. Márquez has and continues to be a representative of the people of Colombia and her election is considered a historic step towards strengthening equality both in Colombia and globally. As Andes bureau chief for The New York Times (https://nyti.ms/3zKKFu8) Julie Turkewitz stated in an article “the rise of Ms Márquez is significant not only because she is black in a nation where Afro-Colombians are regularly subject to racism and must contend with structural barriers, but because she comes from poverty in a country where economic class so often defines a person’s place in society.” A strong advocate for tackling social disparities, environmental challenges and ineffective policies, H.E. Márquez is an example of what female leaders are capable of, representing an important figurehead both in Colombia and worldwide. Just as H.E. Márquez has done, a number of female leaders around the world are taking up their rightful place at the leadership table.

The Rise in African Female Leaders

Africa itself is a global leader in women’s public leadership, with five African countries in the top 20 nations for women’s parliamentary representation, four of which have 45% women representation in cabinets. Like H.E. Márquez will in the coming years, these women have been trailblazers, leading their respective countries through economic, social and health crises, driving socioeconomic growth and development and pioneering initiatives to improve the participation of women economically. Notable examples (https://bit.ly/3dsvr5B) include H.E. Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, Former President of the Republic of Liberia and Founder of the Ellen Johnson Sirleaf Presidential Center for Women and Development; H.E. Sahle-Work Zewde, the fifth President and first woman President of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia; Aja Fatoumata Jallow-Tambajang, Former Vice President of The Gambia; Saara Kuugongelwa-Amadhila, Prime Minister of Namibia; and H.E. Joyce Banda, Former President of Malawi, among many others.

Despite the continent’s progress towards equality in leadership, disparity continues to exist in a number of economic sectors. The energy industry, for example, a sector recognized as the backbone of every economy, shows women accounting for merely 22% of oil and gas employees, with 17% represented in senior and executive roles and only 1% in CEO positions. Therefore, despite progress made, a lot more needs to be done to support women in leadership.

Rallying Global Support

As H.E. Márquez takes on her new position it has become even more prevalent for the African and global community to support her, as well as other women taking on leadership positions. For the African diaspora, H.E. Márquez represents someone who has seized opportunities and fought for her role in society, while for the global African community, she represents the future of leadership. As such, in a world where women have had to and continue to fight for their rightful place at the leadership table, leaders such as H.E. Márquez serve as instrumental figures. However, such support must transcend Colombia’s borders, as women increase their presence in leadership on a global basis.

As the leading investment platform for the African energy sector, Energy Capital & Power (ECP) www.EnergyCapitalPower.com centers each and every one of its large-scale events around rallying support for women in energy and leadership. Dedicated women in energy seminars, networking events and forums emphasize the critical role women continue to play in improving energy access, driving innovative solutions and positioning the African continent as a globally leading energy market. Women led and founded, ECP is focused on helping increase the participation and leadership of women in African energy, thereby rallying the support current and emerging female stakeholders need to thrive.

Despite being Africa-focused, ECP is committed to driving investment in energy on a global basis, and South America is not exempt in this regard. Over the years, South American companies, including Latin American oil and gas company Pluspetrol, have participated in ECP events, driving dialogue and strengthening Africa-global energy relations. In 2022, ECP is eager to improve relations further, inviting South American stakeholders to participate in the company’s 2022 event lineup, https://bit.ly/3SMJXVL and help drive the discussion on women in energy and strengthening female leadership. For both Africa’s and the global economy to thrive, women need to be at the forefront of decision-making, and while H.E. Márquez is not the first female in political leadership worldwide, she most certainly will not be the last.

Sio Named Latest Spotify EQUAL Africa Artist

Through EQUAL, a cross-section of female artists in Africa are given the tools needed to advance their careers and close the gender gap in the music industry. Artists featured in Spotify’s EQUAL Africa programme are exposed to a global listenership, and are also provided with off-platform support and tools to bolster their careers.

“Sio is a breath of fresh air and a welcome addition to the EQUAL programme,” says Spotify’s head of music for sub-Saharan Africa, Phiona Okumu.

“Sio’s effortless contribution to several genres has put her in a class of great contemporary African artists  actively creating on the continent today. It is our hope that other young women creators see this as proof that their talents can and will be recognised and supported,” she adds.

31-year-old Siobhan King, better known by her stage name “Sio,” was born in Johannesburg, South Africa. She is a storyteller through music, poems, performance space, design, and interpretation. Her adaptable voice and distinct ability to switch between musical styles such as Dance, Deep House, and Electro distinguish her as a spectacular artist in a new era of music.

The genre-fluid and award-winning multihyphenate tells deep, dark, difficult and sweet stories through many mediums. Sio grew up listening to artists like Sade, Boyz II Men, Kenny G, The Bee Gees, and South Africa’s own Brenda Fassie. Her music is inspired by these artists, and is influenced by her life experiences, literature and the world around her.

“As a female artist, it’s difficult to carve your own path in a world where that path has already been dictated to you. To be nonconforming and true to yourself is an act of rebellion. I’ve learned that that is the only way to navigate the male-dominated world, especially the music world – to be a woman as defined by me,”explains Sio, reflecting on her career and the difficulties she’s faced as a female singer breaking the mould.

Sio has made hits with a slew of acclaimed producers including Charles Webster, Ralf Gum, Jullian Gomes, Fka Mash and Dwson, to name a few. Affectionately dubbed the ‘career builder’ by fellow long-time collaborator, Kid Fonque, her collaborations have catapulted many musical names. Her voice and words are highly sought after in House, Electronic, Alternative and Soul music circles.

“I’ve taken it upon myself to challenge the ways women are marginalised in the music industry. That’s why I am honoured to be an Ambassador of EQUAL. I am excited about the spotlight it gives me and my music, as well as the many doors and opportunities it will afford me,” she concludes.

To tune into Sio’s unique Electro sound, listeners can stream her tracks featured on the EQUAL Africa and EQUAL Global playlists.

AfDB: Initiative Wins National Association Of Black Journalists Salute To Excellence Award

America’s largest organization of journalists and media professionals of color has named the African Development Bank  a “Salute to Excellence” award winner for the Bank’s communication around its Technologies for African Agricultural Transformation program.

The National Association of Black Journalists cited the Bank’s excellence in online media relations and marketing about the landmark initiative, also known as TAAT. The online campaign featured the impact of TAAT delivering climate-smart agricultural technologies to millions of African farmers, helping African nations grow more food. The awards were announced on Saturday at a gala event during the joint convention of the National Association of Black Journalists and National Association of Hispanic Journalists at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, Nevada.

“This recognition from the National Association of Black Journalists comes at a time when African and global food security are at risk due to Russia’s war in Ukraine. Our Bank communications help tell the world, through the stories of African farmers participating in the TAAT program, that Africa has solutions to boost its food production and reduce dependence on grain imports from the Black Sea region,” said Dr. Beth Dunford, the Bank’s Vice President for Agriculture, Human and Social Development.

“The Salute to Excellence award also honors Bank staff, consultants and partners working within these communities to improve the quality of life for the people of Africa. Their expertise helped shape our communications campaign,” Dunford added.

In July, the Bank’s Board of Directors approved $30 million in new financing for the TAAT program, which overall aims to increase Africa’s food output by 100 million tons and lift 40 million people out of poverty by 2025.

The Bank’s digital campaign showcases some of the millions of African farmers benefitting from TAAT-funded, climate-adapted wheat, maize and other certified seed varieties, fertilizers and technical support since the program started in 2018.

The campaign’s lead video looks at TAAT operations in Sudan and Ethiopia, where government-led collaboration with the Bank and partners is scaling up wheat production to record-breaking levels. In Ethiopia, TAAT helped seed companies to produce and distribute enough heat-tolerant, certified wheat varieties and helped farmers to expand production across more areas last season, allowing Ethiopia to grow enough of the grain to eliminate wheat imports for the first time in modern history. The country’s embrace of TAAT should see Ethiopia export wheat in 2023.

The National Association of Black Journalists’ Salute to Excellence award is the third international communications recognition for the Bank’s TAAT initiative. TAAT earned a “Gold Stevie” – first place – for “Best Documentary” from the International Business Awards, as well as a “Communicator Award of Distinction” for online video from the New York-based Academy of Interactive and Visual Arts.

“We intend for TAAT to produce more success stories, as we scale it up to have a central role in the Bank’s $1.5 billion African Emergency Food Production Facility (https://bit.ly/3SESMkF). The Facility is the Bank’s bold response to help African nations produce more food to mitigate the impacts of Russia’s war in Ukraine on global food systems, rising prices across the continent, and climate change,” said Dr. Martin Fregene, the Bank’s Director for Agriculture and Agro-Industry.

“We believe communications is key to informing African governments, our stakeholders and investors about the impact of the Bank’s programs in the communities we serve,” Fregene added.

The Bank was also nominated for a Salute to Excellence Award in the competition’s “online commentary” category for a selection of published op-eds authored by Bank President Dr. Akinwumi A. Adesina, Vice President Dunford and former Acting Vice President Wambui Guchiri.

The Salute to Excellence Awards recognize journalism and communications that best cover the Black experience or address issues affecting the Black community worldwide.

The National Association of Black Journalists and National Association of Hispanic Journalists’ Convention & Career Fair is the premier conference for journalism education, career development, networking, and industry innovation, attracting leaders and influencers in journalism, marketing and communications, media, technology, business, health, arts, and entertainment.

That said, the youth unemployment rate in Nigeria has accelerated to over 53% during the pandemic. ARB to spin off its IoT Business via a listing on NASDAQ

The listing aims to accelerate the expansion and growth of its IoT business, raising a minimum gross proceeds of USD4 million (based on the issue price of at least USD4 per issue share)

Its IoT-business arm, ARB IoT Group Limited (“AIGL”) would enable the Group to unlock the value of its investment in the IoT business and efficiently allocate resources for its next phase of growth
AIGL Group has built up an IoT development ecosystem to help customers seize opportunities brought by new digital technologies with 4 business lines in IoT segment.
The proposed listing is expected to be completed tentatively by 4Q 2022, barring any unforeseen circumstances and is subject to all required approvals.

KUALA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA Media OutReach 12 August 2022 – Main Market-listed information technology (“IT”) software and platform provider ARB Berhad (“ARB” or “Group”) proposes to list ARB IOT Group Limited (“AIGL”), an indirect wholly-owned subsidiary of ARB Berhad on the NASDAQ Stock Exchange as a spin-off exercise of its IoT business arm (“Proposed Listing”).

AIGL provides a wide range of IoT system services, such as system integration and system support service. A filing with Bursa Malaysia today shows that the Proposed Listing will unlock the value of its investment in the IoT business and efficiently allocate resources to accelerate the expansion and growth of its IoT business.

ARB Berhad Executive Director Dato’ Sri Larry Liew Kok Leong (拿督斯里刘国良) said: “This Proposed Listing will be a new milestone for the Group. AIGL has a robust growth prospect given the evolving demand for new technology trends such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), cloud computing, robotic process automation, Internet-of-Things (IoTs) and hyper-connectivity, which continues to gain momentum.

Driven by favourable factors such as rapid urbanisation, a proliferation of technology and mobile devices and a shift from traditional agriculture to IoT agriculture in ASEAN countries, AIGL aims to be one of the top IoT players in the ASEAN region, particularly in agriculture, property development and logistics industries. “We intend to set up a regional hub for IoT technology in Singapore to support this initiative,” Dato’ Sri Larry said.

“To remain competitive in this fast-paced and ever-evolving industry, we need to invest strongly in the business operation, strategic acquisition and our research & development activities. The spin-off of our IoT business through a listing on the US NASDAQ Stock Exchange will help to provide us with the funding to pursue these expansion and growth opportunities.”

Dato’ Sri Liew also added that a successful listing of AIGL on the NASDAQ Stock Exchange will allow the Group to gain better recognition as a separate listing status, enhancing its corporate reputation, business profile and visibility which in turn will enable it to achieve greater market penetration.

“It’s not just financial flexibility that we are looking at with the listing of AIGL. As a standalone entity, AIGL will achieve greater market penetration and a wider customer base,” Liew said.

He also pointed out that the AIGL’s investor base could be widened through the participation of the global investing community, given the prominence of the NASDAQ Stock Exchange among global investors.

As for ARB, it would unlock the value of its investment through the share offering exercise under the Proposed Listing, thus enhancing the value for its shareholders.

AIGL expects to continue to deliver profitable growth, generate robust cash flow, and return capital to shareholders while maintaining a strong balance sheet. The Company will continue to prioritise opportunities by collaborating with the potential M&A targets to expand its geographical presence by taking advantage of cross-border business opportunities from 2022 onwards.

The filing with Bursa also shows that AIGL has built up an IoT development ecosystem to help customers address the challenges and opportunities of new digital technologies. Accordingly, AIGL Group has been organised into 4 business lines: IoT Smart Home & Building, IoT Smart Agriculture, IoT System Development, and IoT Gadget Distribution.

It added that the proposed utilisations of the proceed from the listing of AIGL on the NASDAQ Stock Exchange will be for the strategic acquisitions and investment activities of the Group, working capital and general corporate purposes, estimated listing expenses and research & development activities.

Going forward, Dato’ Sri Liew shared that the Group is in a good position to expand its business regionally and will accelerate the expansion of its IoT business by gaining new market share. Aside from that, AIGL will expand its customer base by growing its direct sales force and regional sales channels in new markets. The Company will also push towards operational improvement to drive earnings growth, expand margin and improve cashflow.

Barring any unforeseen circumstances and subject to all the required approvals being obtained, the Board of ARB expects the proposed listing of AIGL on the NASDAQ Stock Exchange to be completed by the fourth quarter of 2022.

Udokan Copper receives first BelAZ dump trucks for industrial mining

MOSCOW, RUSSIA Media OutReach – 12 August 2022 – Udokan Copper, the developer of Russia’s largest and one of the world’s biggest copper deposits, has received the first batch of 136-tonne BelAZ dump trucks as it prepares to begin industrial copper mining. The company will also consider using electric hybrid trucks in the future to reduce emissions during the works.

The trucks are designed to transport quarried materials in difficult climatic and mining conditions and will provide the technological capabilities to develop the Udokan copper deposit, located in Russia’s Far East near the border with China. The vehicles, each weighing 107 tonnes, are highly manoeuvrable and can operate under temperatures ranging from -50 to 50ᵒC, while ensuring the safety and comfort of their drivers.

In July 2020, Udokan Copper started developing the deposit as part of the works at the Western mine pit. The Company plans to develop two sections of the mine pit during the first phase of the project. The BelAZ trucks will enable open-pit mining at the site to reach a projected 15 million tonnes per year. A total of 15 vehicles will be delivered by February 2023, rising to 58 by the end of 2023, to be used to transport ore for crushing, floatation, and smelting at the mining and processing plant.

Aleksei Yaschuk, First Deputy CEO and COO at Udokan Copper, said:

“As part of our mining and capital works, we have already set up the sites, roads, and dumps needed for excavating overburden. As of today, we have excavated more than 2 million tonnes of by-product at the mine pit. In the future, the Company is ready to consider using BelAZ diesel-electric hybrid dump trucks, which will allow us to reduce atmospheric emissions and operating costs by saving fuel.”
