BE WARNED: Checkout 13 Dangerous Apps On Google Play Store (HiddenAds)

0

Google Play Store has been infiltrated by a malware called HiddenAds, which endangers Nigerians and other users of the digital distribution service, and threatens their private data.

A malware is a software secretly inputed on a website to disrupt a computer system or phone to damage and gain unauthorized access to unsuspecting individuals or a company’s data.

According to Prime Business Africa, Google Play Store users are now at risk of losing their private information when using the app store, as the malware is hidden in Android apps.

The malware apps have recorded over one million downloads, and have been able to trick people by using Facebook Ads to push the apps as authentic, which prompt users of the social media platform to click the link that takes them to Google Play Store.

13 Dangerous Apps On Google Play Store Nigerians Must Avoid

Researchers at McAfee’s Mobile Research Team discovered the HiddenAds malware, which are namely; Junk Cleaner, EasyCleaner, Power Doctor, Super Clean, Full Clean, Fingertip Cleaner, Quick Cleaner and Keep Clean.

Others are Windy Clean, Carpet Clean, Cool Clean, Strong Clean, as well as Meteor Clean.

When downloaded, these apps begin to display adverts on the phone screens, and trick users into downloading another malware infected app, by claiming the phone is at risk, and needs the referred app to function properly.

NCC Warns Nigerians

Although Google has removed some of these malware HiddenAds, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) also released a statement warning Nigerians of the dangers in using Google Play Store.

In an advisory, NCC’s Computer Security Incident Response Team (NCC-CSIRT), said without opening the malware app after downloading, it can still function, with the malware accessing other apps.

“Upon installation, it can run malicious services without the user opening the app. It also spams the user with irrelevant advertisements. The apps have received downloads ranging from 100,000 to over a million.” NCC said.

  • Schneider Electric-commissioned research exposes sustainability action gap in the data center and IT industries
  • Latest innovations support the next wave of sustainability and resiliency in data centers and distributed edge IT, including:
  • o Launch of the 3kW and 5kW models of APC™ Smart-UPS™ Ultra

o Expansion of EcoStruxure™ IT DCIM software; and
    o EcoStruxure Data Center solutions

HONG KONG SAR – Media OutReach10 August 2022 – Schneider Electric, the leader in digital transformation of energy management and automation, today shared the initial findings of three independent research studies to better understand the maturity of sustainability initiatives within IT and data center organizations, and more specifically, where the IT and data center industry stand in achieving this vision of net-zero IT operations. To help IT professionals and solution providers address ongoing IT deployment pain points in data centers and distributed edge IT, Schneider Electric introduced APC Smart-UPS Ultra, the industry’s first 3kW 1U single-phase Uninterruptable Power Supply (UPS) and the lightest 5kW 2U single-phase UPS. Simultaneously, Schneider Electric announced the modernization of its EcoStruxure IT Data Center Infrastructure Management (DCIM) software portfolio for the monitoring and management of hybrid IT infrastructure, and the latest evolution of the company’s integrated systems, EcoStruxure Data Center Solutions, to support deployment of distributed IT networks in all environments.

Steven Lee, Director, Secure Power, Schneider Electric Hong Kong shared the initial findings of a few commissioned research, exposing the sustainability action gap in the data center and IT industries. He also shared his insights on the current landscape and needs of data center development.

“The data center boom is leading to an energy paradox. Electricity 4.0 is the fastest route to a net-zero future. All data centers – including distributed edge data centers — must be more sustainable, efficient, adaptive, and resilient,” says Steven Lee, Director, Secure Power, Schneider Electric Hong Kong. “According to the research findings, sustainability is the top agenda in the industry, while challenges still exist to taking action and will take a collaborative effort to overcome. The good news is the technology already exists to deliver Electricity 4.0 today.”

APC Smart-UPS Ultra – lightest single-phase 3kW and 5kW UPS on the market

The acceleration of digital technologies and smart applications is driving the need for compute, network, and storage resources that are localized and in close proximity to enable business-critical processes and experiences that rely on network connectivity to the cloud. Yet, configuring, deploying, and maintaining the supporting IT infrastructure for multiple, geographically dispersed sites comes with unique challenges. With the APC Smart-UPS Ultra, Schneider Electric is bringing to market the most advanced single-phase UPS – the industry’s first 3kW 1U UPS and the lightest 5kW UPS on the market, which provides the flexibility to install anywhere and save on the total cost of ownership (TCO) without compromising businesses’ power protection needs.

  • Delivering more power in less space: The APC Smart-UPS Ultra’s compact design delivers more power while taking up less IT space, providing the installation flexibility and power density you need for today and into the future. The 3kW UPS’s compact design is up to 50% smaller and lighter than comparable UPS solutions on the market today, while the 5kW UPS is 50% lighter and 30% smaller than other 5kW UPSs. The APC Smart-UPS Ultra offers flexible mounting options including rack, tower or wall/ceiling mounts, so it can be placed out of the way to allow for more space for IT in the rack.
  • Lowering TCO with lithium-ion battery: The APC Smart-UPS Ultra’s Lithium-ion battery lasts up to three times longer than a traditional valve-regulated lead-acid (VRLA) powered UPS and will not need to be replaced under normal operating conditions. This helps to eliminate costly battery replacement, labor and service fees and visits over the life of the UPS, reducing the total cost of ownership.
  • Ensuring better visibility anytime, anywhere: With the capabilities of cloud-based monitoring, APC Smart-UPS Ultra is EcoStruxure ready, delivers data-driven recommendations to optimize performance, and enables wherever-you-go visibility across multiple UPS devices to provide automated, customizable alerts to make preventative maintenance simpler in order to reduce downtime and lower mean time to repair.

The APC Smart-UPS Ultra 5kW and 3kW will be available in Hong Kong starting in Q4 this year and Q1 2023 respectively.

Fact Sheet: United States (U.S.) Strategy Toward Sub-Saharan Africa

0

Sub-Saharan Africa plays a critical role in advancing global priorities to the benefit of Africans and Americans.   It has one of the world’s fastest growing populations, largest free trade areas, most diverse ecosystems, and one of the largest regional voting groups in the United Nations (UN).

It is impossible to meet today’s defining challenges without African contributions and leadership.  The region will factor prominently in efforts to: end the COVID-19 pandemic; tackle the climate crisis; reverse the global tide of democratic backsliding; address global food insecurity; promote gender equity and equality; strengthen an open and stable international system; shape the rules of the world on vital issues like trade, cyber, and emerging technologies; and confront the threat of terrorism, conflict, and transnational crime.

Building on the Biden-Harris Administration’s actions and commitments to deepen our engagement and partnerships in Africa during the past year, the strategy articulates our new vision for a 21st Century U.S.-African Partnership.  It recognizes the tremendous, positive opportunities that exist to advance shared interests alongside our African partners.  At the same time, we acknowledge that Africa’s potential will continue to be challenged as long as deadly conflicts divide societies, corruption impedes economic progress, food insecurity heightens the risk of famine and malnutrition, and repression stifles human rights and democratic expression.  As President Biden noted in his address to the African Union last year, “none of this is going to be easy but the United States stands ready now to be your partner, in solidarity, support, and mutual respect.”

The new U.S. Strategy Toward Sub-Saharan Africa represents a reframing of Africa’s importance to U.S. national security interests.  We will pursue four main objectives in sub-Saharan Africa:

1. FOSTER OPENNESS AND OPEN SOCIETIES

The United States has an abiding interest in ensuring the region remains open and accessible to all and that governments and publics are able to make their own political choices, consistent with international obligations.  Open societies are generally more inclined to work in common cause with the United States, attract greater U.S. trade and investment, pursue policies to improve conditions for their citizens, and counter harmful activities by the People’s Republic of China, Russia, and other actors.  We will foster openness and open societies, including by:

  • Promoting government transparency and accountability
  • Increasing our focus on rule of law, justice, and dignity
  • Assisting African countries to more transparently leverage their natural resources for sustainable development

2. DELIVER DEMOCRATIC AND SECURITY DIVIDENDS

The region’s commitment and capacity to renew its democracies, as well as anticipate, prevent, and address emerging and long running conflicts, can lead to more favorable outcomes for Africans and Americans.  By simultaneously addressing these challenges and reaffirming that democracy delivers tangible benefits, the United States can offer positive choices to Africans as they determine their own future.  We will help Africa deliver democratic and security dividends, including by:

  • Working with allies and regional partners to stem the recent tide of authoritarianism and military takeovers
  • Backing civil society, empowering marginalized groups, centering the voices of women and youth, and defending free and fair elections
  • Improving the capacity of African partners to advance regional stability and security
  • Reducing the threat from terrorist groups to the U.S. Homeland, persons, and diplomatic and military facilities

3. ADVANCE PANDEMIC RECOVERY AND ECONOMIC OPPORTUNITY

It is essential to address two of the region’s most pressing problems: the COVID-19 pandemic and its attendant economic and social consequences.  These challenges have been compounded by supply chain problems and food insecurity stemming from Russia’s war of aggression in Ukraine.  The United States is committed to working with regional governments and international partners to build more stable and inclusive African economies.  We will advance pandemic recovery and economic opportunity, including by:

  • Prioritizing policies and programs to end the acute phase of the COVID-19 pandemic and build capacities to increase preparedness for the next health threat
  • Supporting manufacturing initiatives for vaccines and other medical countermeasures
  • Promoting a stronger growth trajectory and debt sustainability to support the region’s economic recovery, including through the Partnership for Global Infrastructure and Investment (PGII), Prosper Africa, Power Africa, Feed the Future, and a new initiative for digital transformation
  • Partnering with African countries to rebuild human capital and food systems that were further weakened by the pandemic and Russia’s war against Ukraine

4. SUPPORT CONSERVATION, CLIMATE ADAPTATION, AND A JUST ENERGY TRANSITION

Africa’s efforts to conserve and restore the continent’s ecosystems and rich natural resources— while also realizing energy access and energy security goals, diversifying its energy mix, and building sustainable supply chains—are central to tackling the global climate crisis.  Although the region is responsible for extremely low emissions per capita, it stands to suffer from some of the most severe effects of climate change.  We will support conservation, climate adaptation, and a just energy transition, including by:

  • Partnering with governments, civil society, and local communities to conserve, manage, and restore the continent’s rich natural ecosystems
  • Supporting countries in their efforts to minimize and adapt to the impacts of a changing climate, including enhancing community, economic, and supply chain resilience
  • Working closely with countries to accelerate their just transitions to a clean energy future, energy access, and energy security
  • Pursuing public-private partnerships to sustainably develop and secure the critical minerals that will supply clean energy technologies

Tech Companies Making A Difference In Africa

Africa has long been touted as the continent with the most growth potential when it comes to tech and innovation.

Many African countries are building their own equivalents of Silicon Valley and tech companies from all across the world have been setting up offices and launching themselves into markets across the continent. And in addition to growing their customer bases, these companies are also committing to making affecting change in Africa. Here’s how.

They are Investing in communities and equipping people to become entrepreneurs

Last year Airbnb announced a three-year commitment to South Africa to address barriers to becoming a tourism entrepreneur, and to help rebuild a more inclusive and resilient domestic tourism economy. The commitment focuses on infrastructure, training and investment and builds on Airbnb’s 2017 USD $1 million commitment in Africa to boost community-led tourism projects, and the Africa Academy, which has trained more than 300 Hosts.

As part of this commitment, Airbnb announced its partnership with the University of Johannesburg School of Tourism and Hospitality to expand the Airbnb Academy programme to at least 1000 students over the next three years.

They are assisting in developing quality journalists and newsrooms

Over the years, Google, perhaps the biggest tech giant in the world, has been doing its fair share for small businesses, content creators and business owners across Africa. And just recently the company announced that five South African recipients have been selected as part of  Google’s News Initiative (GNI) Innovation Challenge.

The GNI Innovation Challenge is aimed at helping the journalism industry thrive in the digital era. Their projects are among 34 chosen from 17 countries, to receive a share of $3.2 million in funding. The recipients, among them 21 journalists and publishers from 10 countries in Africa, were selected for their work in promoting diversity, equality, and inclusion in the journalism industry. The GNI Innovation Challenge is part of Google’s $300 million commitment to helping journalism thrive in the digital era and has seen news innovators step forward with many exciting initiatives demonstrating new thinking.

Companies are nurturing talent from a young age

“At Huawei South Africa, we have long been committed to cultivating ICT talent and discovering new ways to harness technological innovation to advance sustainability,”says Vanashree Govender, Media and Communications Manager for Huawei South Africa. “Last year, we launched our Tech4Good Global Competition as part of our Seeds for the Future talent development programme, which exposes learners to courses on the latest technologies like 5G, Cloud, AI and IoT. The Tech4Good competition gets students to think about how to use technology to address social and environmental issues. Through this programme, participants boost their creativity, hone their entrepreneurship skills, and develop a sense of social responsibility. This is a fun team effort, with coaching by Huawei experts and world-renowned social impact leaders”.

Huawei also runs a Tech4All program globally in which Huawei works with partners to create real change through connecting the unconnected, empowering underserved communities and protecting the planet. In South Africa, Huawei’s DigiSchool project in partnership with operator rain and educational non-profit organisation Click Foundation, has connected over 100 urban and rural primary schools to the internet using 5G technology.

They are building the right skills through access to digital media education

Today, there are local entrepreneurs in fields as diverse as fashion, healthcare, and decor who have proven that with more equal access to the digital marketing ecosystem, it’s possible to expand regionally and internationally.

In order for that to happen at scale, they also need the requisite skills to market themselves online in the markets they want to reach. At the very least, those entrepreneurs should have easy access to people with those skills. It’s important to note here, that these aren’t just fundamental digital marketing skills, but ones that relate to the specifics of marketing on the world’s leading digital advertising platforms such as Twitter, Snapchat, and Spotify where people across the globe spend most of their time online. With the right types of messages, these platforms are the most effective places to reach new customers across a broad range of markets.

“This is something that we’re passionate about, and recently, Ad Dynamo by Aleph launched a free Digital Ad Expert programme  for young people in Nigeria and Ghana, which aims to educate, certify and connect thousands of Africans with the digital skills needed to succeed in a rapidly digitising economy. While it’s entirely possible that someone with the right degree of determination and curiosity could develop those skills on their own, it’s critical that more and more resources are accessible to build them up at scale,” says Elyse Estrada, Global Chief Marketing Office, Aleph Group.

This is crucial to ensuring that markets such as Ghana and Nigeria aren’t just growth targets for international companies, but incubators for a new generation of entrepreneurs capable of competing on a global level themselves.

They are creating access for everyone

MFS Africa, the continent’s largest omnichannel payment gateway, believes in a “borderless world” in which everyone has access. Their comprehensive digital networks link 320 million mobile wallets, enabling cross-border payments remittance firms, financial service providers, and worldwide merchants.

MFS Africa CEO and Founder, Dare Okoudjo believes that interoperability is crucial in allowing customers of different mobile financial services providers to interact with each other. This can be done by making direct payments from the mobile money account of one provider to the mobile money account of another provider.

To do this, MFS Africa acquired Global Technology Partners (GTP) recently, broadening its bank and fintech base and supplying tokenisation in the mobile money space by connecting with established card ecosystems like Visa and Mastercard. The ultimate objective is to give millions of mobile money users on the continent access to the global digital economy and new possibilities. For its partners, these new capabilities enable scalability, security, and new markets and consumers as technology innovation continues to penetrate and reshape societies.

Whatsapp Adds New Privacy Features

Whatsapp, the popular worldwide instant messaging app, has introduced new features as part of security measures to make the app safer and easier to use.

With over two billion downloads, the green app is one of the most popular social media platforms for both personal and business use.
“We’ll keep building new ways to protect your messages and keep them as private and secure as face-to-face conversations,” said Meta founder Mark Zuckerberg.

The latest update includes new privacy features such as the ability to exit group chats without notifying everyone; the ability to choose who can see when you’re online for the number of contacts you want; and the ability to prevent screenshots from pictures and videos when they are only displayed once.

According to Meta, the new features give users more privacy, protection, and control.

“We believe that messaging and calling should be as private and secure as face-to-face communication.” As if two people were talking and no one else was present. ” WhatsApp protects users’ personal calls and messages with end-to-end encryption by default, so no one but the intended recipient can hear or see them. “However, that is only one important aspect of protecting your privacy,” a statement on the Whatsapp blog reads in part.

“Over the years, we’ve added new layers of privacy protections to give you multiple ways to secure your messages, including self-destructing disappearing messages and end-to-end encrypted backups when you want to save your chat.”

“Today, we’re excited to introduce several new privacy features that add additional layers of protection and give you more control over your messages.” “This is all part of how we work to keep your WhatsApp conversations secure,” it added.

Leave Groups Quietly: “We enjoy our group chats, but some are not permanent. We’re making it possible to leave a group privately without upsetting everyone. Instead of notifying the entire group when you leave, only the administrators will be notified. This feature will be available to all users starting this month.”

Select Who Can See You When You’re Online:

“Seeing when friends or family are online helps us feel connected, but we’ve all had times when we wanted to check our WhatsApp privately.” We’re introducing the ability to choose who can and cannot see your online presence when you’re online for those times when you want to keep your online presence private. This will be available to all users later this month.”
Screenshot Blocking For Messages That Can Only Be Viewed Once:

“View Once is already a hugely popular way to share photos or media that don’t require a permanent digital record.” For an added layer of security, we’ve enabled screenshot blocking for View Once messages. We’re currently testing this feature and hope to make it available to users soon.”
