DHL Global Forwarding Partners Big Bad Wolf Books to Co-author Asia’s Literary Resurgence with Massive Book Sales

0

  • DHL Global Forwarding delivered
more than one million books to the Big Bad Wolf Book Sale events across Asia
  • The success of each book sale
event hinges on the timely delivery of over 70 TEU of books, supported by DHL
Global Forwarding’s expertise in ocean and road freight, customs clearance,
    warehousing, and trade fair services

KUALA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA – Media
OutReach
 – 19
November 2019 –
The Big Bad Wolf Book Sale, which
first started in Selangor, Malaysia, has become synonymous all over the world with
affordable books and large-scale book sale events. DHL Global Forwarding lent its expertise in
end-to-end logistics to bring millions of books of all genre for the Big Bad
Wolf Book Sale to reach the readers in countries like Sri Lanka, Pakistan,
Thailand, Myanmar, Indonesia, Philippines, South Korea and Taiwan.

“In just
10 years, the Big Bad Wolf Book Sale has grown from a single book sale in Kuala
Lumpur into a regional literary phenomenon that has defied pessimism about the
printed word’s future,” said Andrew Yap, Co-Founder of Big Bad Wolf
Books. “When we started in 2009, we couldn’t have anticipated the huge demand
and positive reactions given that digital e-books were all the rage. Our persistent
efforts paid off culminating in more than five million attendees at our
events over the past two years alone.”

Known as
the World’s Biggest Book Sale, the Big Bad Wolf Book Sale stands for an organization
that advocates reading and English literacy with a mission to change the world
one book at a time. DHL Global Forwarding’s ocean and road freight services
transport around 70 TEU (twenty foot-equivalent unit) of books to each Big Bad
Wolf Book Sale event across Asia. The organization also
provides customs clearance and last-mile trucking to ensure each event runs
without a hitch.

“The
unique nature of book imports requires our customs brokerage team to carry out
intensive pre-work documentation and closely coordinate with several parties
upon each shipment’s arrival at its destination,” said Kelvin Leung, CEO, DHL
Global Forwarding Asia Pacific. “Our expertise in and history of working with
customs regulators around the Asia Pacific region have proved immensely useful
in ensuring that the books arrive on time. We count it a privilege to act as
Big Bad Wolf Books’ logistics provider as they strengthen literacy and a love for reading in communities across
Asia.”

“The logistics
of book sales aren’t as straightforward at first glance. Customs clearance
services play a particularly crucial role in maintaining an efficient supply
chain — an exact and detailed description of each book is required for customs
clearance purposes due to differing laws and regulations governing the sale of
books around the world, while most local authorities stipulate that books can
only be delivered to event venues within strict time limits,” said Olivia
Cashin, Head of Value Added Services, DHL Global Forwarding Asia Pacific.

The
global book printing market is anticipated to reach US$49 billion by 2024, with Asia Pacific contributing
the largest market share of any region in 2018. Books sold at the Big Bad Wolf Book
Sale come from excess stock of major international distributors, resulting in
discounts between 50% and 90% off recommended retail price.

“As we
expand into more cities, we’re honing our logistics capabilities to keep our book
sales events aptly stocked, whilst navigating the complexity of customs and
regulations in many of the markets that we operate in. DHL Global Forwarding’s
team of experts have been a valuable help with that,” said Andrew.

PalmPay Raises $40m From TECNO Mobile to broaden financial inclusion across Africa

PalmPay, an Africa-focused mobile payment start-up, recently announced a $40million funding round led by leading mobile phone brand TECNO mobile to advance financial inclusion across the continent.

The Fintech firm has officially launched a smartphone app with a mobile wallet in Nigeria after a pilot phase that saw it gain 100,000 users and process more than a million transactions within two months.

“PalmPay will use the capital to grow its digital financial services business in Nigeria and Ghana and to support upcoming launches in several other African countries,” Greg Reeve, Global PalmPay CEO said.

NetEase, one of the largest internet technology companies in China, and Mediatek, a leading semiconductor company, also participated in the round.

The PalmPay mobile wallet offers customers a platform to top up funds electronically or via offline access points, with the ability to make and accept individual and merchant payments. PalmPay offers consumers a range of digital services, including P2P transfers, airtime and bill payment.

With a tagline of “the payment app that rewards you,” PalmPay’s USP of offering cashback and discounts to its users have caught on in the price-sensitive Nigerian and Ghanaian markets. In Nigeria, PalmPay is offering 10% cashback on airtime purchases and bank transfer rates of N10 with free deposits and withdrawals to its mobile wallet.

As part of its investment deal with TECNO mobile, PalmPay also announced a strategic partnership that will see the payments app pre-installed on up to 20m phones in 2020. A similar deal was closed with Infinix and Itel. The app is also available on the Google Play Store and iOS app stores.

“Tecno has helped expand access to smartphones among the Nigerian population. We are now looking to leverage this infrastructure to further improve people’s lives,” said Stephen Ha, General Manager of TECNO Mobile. “We see a huge growth opportunity in mobile payments and financial services on the continent and are looking forward to working together with the PalmPay team to help shape the future of payments in Africa.”

In a market where only 40 percent of adults have access to a formal financial account, PalmPay wants to provide financial services for both banked and unbanked consumers to achieve nationwide reach.

To do this, it has obtained an Approval-in-Principle for a Mobile Money Operator license from the CBN, which allows it to build an agent network to facilitate in-person cash in and cash out to its mobile wallet. First on the list to be converted to agents are the thousands of retail stores that are part of the TECNO distribution network, while independent locations are being boarded by a dedicated team.

PalmPay’s stated aim of including the unbanked in its payment platform comes at a time when the Nigerian government is promoting several policies and initiatives aimed at furthering financial inclusion.

The Central Bank of Nigeria plans to ensure that 80 percent of Nigerian adults are included in the financial net by 2020. It launched the National Financial Inclusion Strategy (NFIS) in January 2012 to help achieve the set target. However, recent data by EFInA put Nigeria’s financial inclusion rate at 63.2 percent, meaning that as much as 36.8 percent of adults still lack access to financial services. Innovations like PalmPay can play a role in accelerating progress to meet these ambitious national financial inclusion goals.

PalmPay also plans to leverage the network of over 100,000 merchants belonging to Visa, which the company counts as strategic partners. In April 2019, PalmPay announced that it would work together with VISA to roll out innovations in the African digital payments space.

Visa cardholders can initiate payments within the app and make online and mobile payments by attaching their card details to their PalmPay profile. Non-card carriers will be able to generate a virtual Visa card upon registration.

According to the CEO of PalmPay, this ecosystem approach is key to the company’s goal of becoming Africa’s largest payments platform. “We want to provide the best choice and value in the market to consumers so that PalmPay becomes a one-stop financial hub, online and offline,” Reeve said. Through its partnerships with TECNO mobile and Visa, PalmPay is building out a very reliable payment network that will soon reach millions of users.

Orange Bank Moves Into Lending Market, Confirms Expansion In Africa

Orange Bank has celebrated two years in business with a presentation on its recent and future projects. Since its French launch in November 2017, the company has developed several new services and has recently introduced personal loans offered to Orange mobile customers buying a smartphone and other devices. Available since October, these over-the-counter loans have been taken out by 5,000 people since their launch a month ago. By the end of the year, the Orange subsidiary will start financing property purchases in collaboration with Nexity, a real estate services platform that Stephane Richard founded with other partners nearly 20 years ago.

Outside France, Orange Bank is already present in Spain where its services are under trial and are scheduled to launch commercially very soon. The company has also secured a licence to operate in Africa, where it should arrive in the middle of 2020. In Romania, it introduced a debit card offer earlier this year, which is currently signing up over 7,000 new customers per month.

With a workforce of 878 employees, the French operations aim to become profitable by 2023-2024. In the latest financial release, Orange said that the EBITDA after Leases (EBITDAaL) result remained negative for its banking venture, with the loss widening to EUR 115 million in the nine months to September, from a loss of EUR 92 million in the year-earlier period.

In 2020, the bank will expand its French offering further, by acting as an insurance broker in connection with smartphone plans (theft/damage cover). It is also working on new services targeting Orange small business customers, scheduled for 2021. In the near future, it plans to make Google Pay available for customers with Android phones.

Orange Bank said that it is signing up over 20,000 new customers per month and that its active base has now reached 500,000. The company told La Tribune that this total includes 360,000 current accounts and 135,000 personal loans. It had previously reported 344,000 accounts opened as of 30 September, up from 320,000 at end-June.

Around 10 percent of new accounts are being opened with the Visa Premium card, which has been available since March for a charge of EUR 7.99/month. Among its selling points, the card offers a 5 percent cash back when holders purchase smartphones and other devices sold by Orange.
