Mo’Nique Sues Netflix For Race, Gender Discrimination

As the #MeToo and Time’s Up movement continues to gain momentum in Hollywood, so does the issue of gender pay disparity. More than that, the issue of race and gender pay disparity has surfaced.

Mo’Nique, on Thursday, filed a legal suit against Netflix, accusing the company of race and sex discrimination by allegedly low balling her on an offer to produce a comedy special.

Monique Angela Hicks, known professionally as Mo’Nique, is an American comedian and actress.

In 2018, the 51-year-old Oscar-winning actress and comedienne posted on Instagram a video of herself calling for a boycott of Netflix for “gender bias” and “colour bias.” She claimed the company offered $500,000 to record a comedy special, which she said was a much smaller sum than it had offered other comics like Amy Schumer, Chris Rock, and Dave Chappelle.

The company said in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter: “We care deeply about inclusion, equity, and diversity and take any accusations of discrimination very seriously. We believe our opening offer to Mo’Nique was fair—which is why we will be fighting this lawsuit.”

In her suit, the popular Hollywood actress claimed that “The offer Netflix made her “wreaked of discrimination; it perpetuated the pay gap suffered by black women”. She’s suing Netflix for unspecified damages, and for an injunction forcing the company to change its discriminatory policies.

“Mo’Nique objected to Netflix’s discriminatory pay offer, pointed out how it was discriminatory and asked Netflix to do the right thing by negotiating fair pay with her.,” the suit states. “In response, Netflix did the opposite. It dug its heels in the ground, refused to negotiate fairly and stood behind its discriminatory offer.”

“Unfortunately for Mo’Nique and many other women of colour, their challenges when speaking up about pay gap inequality are all the greater because they are met with scepticism, not empathy when they ask for more money,” the suit states.

“We celebrated victories of many talented actresses like Emmy Rossum, Jennifer Lawrence, and Ellen Pompeo publicly aired their financial grievances against networks and studios who paid their male colleagues more money than them. This has not been the case for Mo’Nique who to this day has not been made a fair and non-discriminatory offer by Netflix.”

Heritage Bank Identifies High Prospects In Nigeria’s £4bn Gold Market

Heritage Bank Plc, Nigeria’s most innovative banking service provider, disclosed that Nigeria’s Gold market is worth £4 billion Pounds with high prospects of profitability for all players in the sub-sector.

The MD/CEO, Ifie Sekibo, who stated this at the Nigeria-Canada Investment Summit, held in Abuja, yesterday also disclosed that the enormous potential of the industry was one of the reasons why Heritage Bank delved into the mining sector despite enormous risks.

According to him, the bank has Dukia Gold as its partner that would facilitate access to local miners and artisans to get value for their commodity at international market price after being registered with Dukia Gold.

Sekibo, who was represented by the Team Lead, Agric Finance and Export, Adelana Ogunjirin, explained that prior to now, local miners of Gold found it difficult to trade their commodities favourably but with the involvement of Dukia and its partner, Heritage Bank, a Quality-and-Quantity test will be conducted based on the arrangement they made with Dukia Gold and that will lead to added value to the smallholder miners. He explained that this will leverage the small miners the opportunity to also trade their commodities at an international market price.

R-L: Team Lead, Agric Finance and Export Heritage Bank, Mr Adelana Ogunjirin; Dr. Hadiza Gado; Managing Director /Chief Executive of Nigeria Export-Import Bank (NEXIM ) Mr Abba Bello; Managing Director Dukia Gold, Bose Owolabi  and Mr Tunde Fagbemi during NCIS Summit 2019 – Mining Master Class held at Transcorp Hotel Abuja

He further stated that a metric tonne of gold is currently valued at $30million adding that it is worth investing in the industry, especially as gold is a kind of commodity that does not easily lose its value.

He said: “Mining sector is an area which has not been fully tapped in terms of the potentials around it, as there are quite a lot of opportunities around that sector. Recently we secured $1 billion funding line with our funding partner AfreximBank, which also is to support areas like solid minerals.

“Now with respect to this we have looked at the value chain of this space and we have looked at the opportunities that are there. A lot of fund providers have not really delved into this and it is because of the lack of understanding of the market.

“In terms of value, gold is an area where you can enhance the value. You hardly see Gold losing value and you see that in different exchanges you even trade those commodities.

“Looking at it in terms of trend, you see that gold is something that will appreciate definitely. So in terms of the profitability of this business, we have looked at it, the crunch, the numbers we see that is a space that the Bank will definitely earn a lot of income.”

He also expressed optimism that other banks would like to come into the Nigerian mining sector but maybe studying to understand the sector properly.

“Definitely other banks will come into the sector. For us, we are leading, but the truth is they need to play in an area and space that they understand, as not everybody would be able to play in that space.

“Heritage Bank has already carved a niche for itself in agribusiness space, just like the Gold commodity, this would be exported. So, in terms of export proceeds too, there are opportunities to be explored. Generally, looking at the Nigerian outlook, in the long run, this will also enhance the country’s external reserves. There are multiplier effects of what we are doing today and that is why we are also moving in this direction,” the MD noted.

Also speaking, Managing Director, Nigeria Export-Import Bank, NEXIM, Abba Bello, revealed that the bank had gone into high-level discussions with heavy equipment manufacturers and suppliers that would lease equipment to miners for exploration and processing, adding that this was expected to make the equipment accessible and affordable.

Bello said, “For equipment supplier or outright purchase of equipment, we have gone into discussions with Blue care and now Mantrac for the supply of heavy equipment for gold processing or exploration on lease basis and, it is something that does not exist currently within the industry.

“Barrick Gold and Bullion Mart is something that happens in the mining world. You don’t have to own the equipment, but there are vendors who supply the equipment for explorers to hire.

“Discussions have gone very far with the equipment suppliers and very soon we will announce the programme.”

Meanwhile, the Country Manager, ITM, Nigeria, Habibah Waziri, raised concerns on human resources development that would sustain the sector.

Waziri also said there is a need to formalize the sector and also invest in human capital in the sector for growth and development.

Flipkart To Collect Plastic Packaging From Doorstep

Flipkart on Thursday announced the rollout of a new initiative that focuses on creating awareness among consumers on the proper disposal of plastic packaging and make them active participants in its sustainability agenda.

Flipkart is conducting a pilot project to collect plastic packaging back from consumers at select hubs across Mumbai, Bengaluru, Dehradun, Delhi, Kolkata, Pune, and Ahmedabad. The initiative aims at ensuring existing plastic packaging in the system is recycled and reused.

“We have taken bold steps towards reducing single-use plastic in the system by replacing it with various eco-friendly alternatives and are constantly innovating with our approaches. We are proud to be the first-ever e-commerce marketplace to channelise plastic packaging back into the system through the door-to-door collection with the help of our Wishmaster,” said Rajneesh Kumar, Chief Corporate Affairs Officer, Flipkart Group.

“We believe a collective approach of all stakeholders would help us in achieving the dream of a Swachh and Samridha Bharat, and the country’s vision to phase out single-use plastic,” Kumar added.

Under the initiative, the company will send out an intimation to consumers asking them to voluntarily hand over plastic packaging to Flipkart wish masters for its proper disposal, at the time of product delivery.

The collected packets will then be sent to registered vendors to ensure it is disposed of responsibly to avoid ending up in landfills, the company said in a statement.

Wishmaster has also been provided proper training in explaining the various facets of this initiative to consumers to ensure high participation.

This initiative is in continuation of Flipkart’s sustainability agenda under which it has already reduced the utilisation of single-use plastic by 33 percent and aims to move towards 100 percent recycled plastic consumption in its supply chain by March 2021.

Teledyne e2v Unveils New Multi-Channel ADC Supporting up to 6.4GSps Operation

0

With engineers benefitting from procurement & qualification of one part number that is applicable in various configurations

GRENOBLE, FRANCE – Media
OutReach
 – 15 November 2019 – Continuously pushing the performance envelope,
Teledyne e2v introduces the EV12AQ605 12-bit quad-channel analog-to-digital
converter (ADC). A variation on the company’s
popular EV12AQ600 ADC, this latest signal conditioning solution offers almost identical
functionality, but at a lower price point that will appeal to high volume,
cost-sensitive markets. The only key differences are the number of interleaving mismatch calibration
settings saved on the one time programmable (OTP) memory and the temperature
range supported (-40°C to +110°C, rather than the EV12AQ600’s -55°C to +125°C).
As these ADCs are pin-to-pin
compatible, engineers have a straightforward replacement path that doesn’t
require alterations to existing EV12AQ600-based designs.

Inclusion of a crosspoint
switch means the EV12AQ605’s four processing cores can each run independently,
simultaneously or paired together, thereby allowing allocation of the full sampling capacity to meet specific
channel count requirements. The ADC delivers a 6.4GSps single-channel
sampling rate, 3.2GSps/channel while in dual-channel mode and 1.6GSps/channel
in quad-channel mode. It can be operated as a standalone unit or synchronized to ADC
counterparts. Output data is
delivered at speeds of up to 12. 8Gbps via a low-latency ESIstream serial link.

Alongside all this, Teledyne e2v’s
proprietary chain synchronizing mechanism assures continued synchronization
across the channels of multiple units. Consequently, the EV12AQ605 is optimized for addressing the rising channel counts
of next generation wireless infrastructure – where digital beam forming, large
phased-array antennas and multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems will
soon be commonplace. In addition, this ADC can be incorporated into
phased-array radars, LiDAR systems, high-speed industrial data acquisition
hardware, wideband satellite receivers, automated test equipment and advanced
digital instrumentation.

“Numerous
applications are now emerging which mandate access to synchronized,
deterministic data from a large number of parallel channels. Our EV12AQ605 ADCs can be synchronously chained together in
a robust, reliable manner that is not affected by changes to the operating
conditions.” states Romain Pilard, Senior Application Engineer at Teledyne e2v.
“Furthermore, by being able to deal with a diverse range of system configurations through one, highly
versatile ADC solution, the associated engineering costs can be minimized.”

Bridging
the gap between the analog RF and digital worlds, the EV12AQ605’s input bandwidth exceeds
6.5GHz (in extended bandwidth mode). The number of channels used, gain, offset and sample
delay are all programmable through its SPI interface. This ADC is supplied in a 16mm x 16mm BGA package. For
