Average Bus Fare Decreases in December 2018 – NBS

The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) says the average fare paid by commuters for bus journey within the city decreased by -5.64% month-on-month and increased by 5.99% year-on-year to N181.61 in December 2018 from N192.46 in November 2018.

The bureau said this in its Transport Fare Watch (December 2018) report released in Abuja on Wednesday.

According to the report, states with highest bus journey fare within the city were Abuja FCT (N312.50), Cross River (N323.08) and Zamfara (N300.00) while States with lowest bus journey fare within the city were Rivers (N128.13), Anambra (N125.79) and Bauchi (N100.00).

It noted that the average fare paid by commuters for bus journey intercity decreased by -11.79% month-on-month and by -7.99% year-on-year to N1,579.11 in December 2018 from  N1,790.14 in November 2018. It said the states with highest bus journey fare intercity were Abuja FCT (N4,633.33), Borno (N2,500.00) and Adamawa (N2,275.00) while States with lowest bus journey fare within city were Nasarawa (N155.56), Plateau (N254.29) and Bauchi (N966.67).

According to the report, average fare paid by air passengers for specified routes single journey decreased by -4.06% month-on-month and by -5.73% year-on-year to N31,471.62 in December 2018 from N32,804.05 in November 2018.  States with highest air fare were Lagos (N36,500.00), Abuja FCT (N38,500.00) and Jigawa (N38,500.00) while States with lowest air fare were Oyo (N25,000.00), Taraba (N25,500.00), and Katsina (N23,750.00).

It said: “Average fare paid by commuters for journey by motorcycle per drop increased by -2.79% month-on-month and 5.49% year-on-year to N118.35 in December 2018 from N121.76 in November 2018. States with highest journey fare by motorcycle per drop were Edo (N194.00), Rivers (N189.29) and Lagos (N187.50) while states with lowest journey fare by motorcycle per drop were Adamawa (N50.00) Bauchi (N61.11) and Jigawa (N61.54)”.

“Average fare paid by passengers for waterway passenger transport decreased by 0.97% month-on-month and  -9.97% year-on-year to N568.58 in December 2018 from N563.11 in November 2018. States with highest fare by waterway passenger transport were Bayelsa (N2,255.00), Rivers (N1,760.00) and Delta (N1,485.00) while states with lowest fare by waterway passenger transport were Borno (N115.00), Niger (N200.00) and Gombe (N185.00)”.

According to NBS, the Transport fare watch report for December 2018 covers the following categories namely bus journey within the city per drop constant route; bus journey intercity, state route, charge per person; airfare charge for specified routes single journey; journey by motorcycle (Okada) per drop; and waterway passenger transport.
