Lagos Agencies set to Combat Building Collapse

The Acting General Manager of the Lagos State Materials Testing Laboratory, LSMTL, Engr. Olalekan Ajani has stated that effective collaboration among Lagos State Agencies will ensure a drastic reduction in building collapse across the State.

Engr. Ajani, who stated this during his meeting with the Director-General, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, at Safety Arena, Oshodi on Wednesday, said LSMTL was determined to have an effective collaboration with sister agencies, especially LASEMA, towards building a better working relationship.

He explained that effective collaboration among sister agencies will go a long way in helping to prevent the issue of building collapse arising from the use of substandard materials and disregard for rules and regulations for building construction in Lagos State.

According to him, “If contractors and builders adhere strictly to stipulated rules and regulations and use recommended standard materials or have their materials tested by LSMTL before the commencement of construction there would be a drastic reduction in collapse buildings and the resultant loss of lives and property across the metropolis”.

Speaking in the same vein, Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu said there is a need for effective collaboration and partnership among key agencies of the State government in order to prevent the issue of collapsed buildings and enhance the safety of lives in the State.

He disclosed that with LASEMA having zonal offices in each of the 57 Local Governments and Local Council Development Areas, the agency is ready to render all necessary support to LSMTL in achieving the set goals and objectives of the present administration.
