MTN Surges On Strong Earnings

In the first quarter of 2022, MTN Nigeria Communications PLC earned N421.49 billion from calls and data.

This represents a 20.32 percent increase over the N350.31 billion earned by the telecoms company from voice and data in the same period in 2021. MTN revealed in its Q1 2021 earnings report that it will earn N470.98 billion in total revenue in 2022.

According to the company, due to regulatory restrictions on new SIM sales and activations, its subscribers fell by 1.3 million to 70.2 million year on year. It also stated that active data users increased to 35.9 million year on year, while fintech subscribers increased to 10.7 million.

He added that the Central Bank of Nigeria’s final approval for its MoMo Payment Service Bank would allow the company to offer financial services and drive financial inclusion in the country.

Toriola announced that the company now has 166,000 active MoMo agents. “Although our mobile subscriber base fell by 1.9% year on year from 71.5 million in March 2021 to 70.2 million, we maintained the growth trajectory beginning in Q4 2021 as we ramp up capacity for SIM registration and NIN enrolment,” he said.
