The owner of the infamous pirate domain www.score808.com.ng has been seized by the Force Intelligence Bureau’s Intelligence Response Team (IRT). Millions of visitors from all around Africa visited this notoriously illegally streaming MultiChoice (SuperSport) content domain.

The arrest, which happened in Osogbo, Osun State, on August 22, 2024, represents a significant turning point in the ongoing fight against internet streaming piracy and theft of intellectual property. The arrest comes after a protracted investigation that took several months.

Despite attempts to avoid detection by moving around a lot, the IRT’s unrelenting pursuit made the arrest inevitable in the end. The suspect is still being held by the police, and there is strong proof that he was involved in widespread illicit streaming. The suspect may receive a five-year prison sentence if found guilty.

The website traffic data clearly show the scope of the illicit enterprise. The website www.score808.com.ng received 3.1 million visitors worldwide, with more than 1.2 million of those visits coming from Africa.

Irdeto’s Director of Broadcasting and Cyber Piracy, Frikkie Jonker, acknowledged the Nigerian Police’s commitment to the operation and their assistance. He said: “All forms of piracy continue to pose a significant threat to the creative industry. At Irdeto, we are fully committed to addressing every facet of piracy, whether it occurs online or through other means. The arrest of this notorious pirate is a testament to what can be achieved when law enforcement agencies and private sectors work hand in hand. We sincerely appreciate the Nigerian Police’s unwavering support, which has led to this positive outcome.”

In addition to being illegal, online streaming piracy puts consumers in serious danger. Consumers who download illegal content frequently run the risk of having their personal information compromised by malware, phishing scams, and other cybersecurity risks.

Furthermore, consumers who interact with illicit streams unintentionally undermine the livelihoods of thousands of individuals engaged in the creation and dissemination of material.

Continuing, piracy has an economic impact outside of the entertainment sector. Reputational harm occurs to nations that are thought to be centres of piracy, which can discourage foreign investment and slow economic growth. Governments lose out on tax revenue that could be utilised to pay for public services because of the significant revenue loss caused by piracy.

The creative business is greatly impacted by this kind of infringement. Piracy severely reduces content creators’, broadcasters’, and distributors’ revenue streams, which has a direct impact on their capacity to make investments in fresh, creative content.

In addition to hurting individual producers, the loss of cash from piracy affects the entire business, eliminating jobs for everyone from directors and actors to technical personnel and marketing departments. This cutback in funding discourages innovation and originality, which limits the range and calibre of programming that is accessible to viewers.

However, the integrity and longevity of the whole creative ecosystem are threatened by piracy. Widespread content theft diminishes the value of authors’ labour and intellectual property, making it harder for reputable platforms to compete. This may result in less money being spent on original programming, fewer chances for up-and-coming artists, and, in the end, a less dynamic and varied cultural environment.

In this situation, the Nigerian Police’s activities serve to defend the country’s economic interests and international reputation in addition to protecting intellectual property.

MultiChoice is unwavering in its efforts to stop intellectual property theft and is fighting piracy in tandem with Irdeto and Nigerian law enforcement. The cooperation between the Nigerian Police and the legal system will not end as the case progresses.

This arrest serves as a stark warning that piracy of any kind will not be accepted. The creative sector is essential to the social, cultural, and economic fabric of society, and safeguarding it will always be a top priority, BrandSpur digital news platform reports.
