Bluesky Subscribers Surge By 3million After X Ban, Brazil Covers 85%

Launched in 2021 and co-founded by Jack Dorsey, Bluesky is a rapidly expanding social media site with over 10 million subscribers.

The main cause of this expansion is said to be the spike in Brazilian users that happened when Elon Musk’s X was shut down within the country. In a congratulatory statement, the business said that its early adopters are included in this first wave of 10 million consumers.

Interestingly, Bluesky has added an enjoyable feature to its homepage where visitors can find their unique joining number and share it with friends by clicking on a celebration emoji. This interactive component gives the user experience a more customised feel.

Following a verdict by Brazil’s Supreme Court banning X, formerly Twitter, from operating in the nation, Bluesky’s user base has dramatically increased. In addition, those who tried to use VPNs to access the platform were penalised. Following X’s departure, some social networks experienced a surge in popularity, such as Bluesky and Meta’s Threads, especially in Brazil, where both applications are currently ranked in the top 10 in the app store.

Shortly after the X ban, Bluesky reportedly added over 3 million subscribers, increasing its overall user base to over 9 million earlier in the month. Remarkably, more than 85% of these new users are Brazilian.

BrandSpur digital news platform reports that due to the platform’s explosive growth, Bluesky encountered brief server outages last week as a result of a high volume of new customers signing up. Bluesky first functioned as an invite-only establishment for nearly a year before opening to the general public in February.

Several enhancements have also been made to the site, such as self-moderation capabilities that give users more control over how others engage with them. These features allow users to limit who can cite their posts, hide specific answers, and mute certain words for a predetermined amount of time.

Even while Threads, Bluesky’s rival, has more than 200 million members, it is still well-positioned in the competition for social media supremacy. Still, Bluesky is expanding. Recently, it allowed users to submit movies, giving its platform an additional feature as it looks to stand out in a more crowded market.
