With the successful launch of its flagship healthcare initiative, Eye Can See, in Imo State for the 2024–2025 year, Seplat Energy, a leading indigenous energy company, has once again shown its leadership in corporate social investment in collaboration with the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL).
The program has been providing thousands of underprivileged residents with free screenings, surgeries, and eyeglass distribution for more than five days, demonstrating the JV’s unwavering commitment to enhancing healthcare access in its host communities.
On September 19, 2024, at the Full Moon Hotel in Owerri, the “Eye Can See” program in Imo State got underway. This was a major turning point in Seplat’s ongoing history of effective healthcare outreach, which dates back to 2012. The initiative was started with the goal of reducing preventable blindness, encouraging early detection of eye diseases, and improving the quality of life for beneficiaries. To date, it has reached over 105,000 Nigerians, performed 4,560 life-changing eye surgeries, and distributed more than 51,000 reading glasses.
Emmanuel Otokhine, Base Manager, Eastern Asset, Seplat Energy, spoke on behalf of Ibi-Ada Itotoi, Managing Director, Eastern Asset, at the flag-off, highlighting the company’s commitment to comprehensive human and community development. “In the areas where we operate, we are partners in progress, not just operators. Through programs like “Eye Can See,” we make sure that our commitment to our communities extends beyond business operations and that they reap the real benefits of our presence.
In agreement, Dr. Obinna Otuu, an asset manager at NUIMS, and Bala Wunti, Chief Upstream Investment Officer, NNPC Upstream Investment Management Services (NUIMS), emphasized the program’s wider effects. “Uplifting lives and managing resources are not the only aspects of success. The “Eye Can See” program is evidence of our steadfast dedication to the welfare of the communities we serve. In addition to meeting immediate medical needs, NNPCL and Seplat Energy are teaching communities how to manage chronic illnesses like diabetes and hypertension, which can result in vision loss.
The Imo State Government was deeply moved by the significance of the “Eye Can See” program. Honorable Commissioner Emeka Mgbudem Esq. of the Imo State Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas Development commended the project, stating, “Seplat and NNPCL have demonstrated that their collaboration extends beyond the production of energy.” It is concerned with the development of human capacity, health, and education. The variety of people receiving treatment for cataracts and glaucoma nowadays shows me that they have a better vision for the future. Seplat continues to be our greatest partner, and we are pleased with the work they are producing.

This sentiment was shared by HRH Eze (Sir) Blaise Ubah, the Olu Oha II of Mgbala-Agwa Autonomous Community, Oguta LGA. “Seplat has consistently stood out as a responsible corporate citizen. They have brought this programme to our community as they have in previous years, and they continue to set the standard for others in the industry. Their dedication is unmatched,” he added.
For many beneficiaries, the programme has been a beacon of hope. Adanne Ekeneme, whose relative received a free eye screening and treatment, expressed her deep gratitude: “This programme is life-changing. What would have cost us a fortune is being provided for free. I pray that God continues to bless Seplat and NNPC for their kindness.”
Chief Hyginus Onyeuka, who underwent cataract surgery, shared his transformative experience: “I was blind for many years, but today I can see clearly. I can’t thank Seplat enough for restoring my sight. This programme is nothing short of a miracle for people like me.”
The Eye Can See programme is a shining example of Seplat Energy JV’s commitment to creating sustainable, long-lasting impact in its host communities. By providing essential healthcare services to thousands of individuals, Seplat Energy is not only addressing immediate medical needs but also fostering a culture of proactive health management.
As Seplat Energy JV continues its mission of community empowerment and sustainable development, initiatives like ‘Eye Can See’ reflect a deep-rooted belief in the power of corporate social investment. With NNPCL and local stakeholders, Seplat Energy’s Eye Can See programme stands as a beacon of hope, illuminating the path toward a future where everyone can live with clarity, dignity, and excellent health
