Award-winning Nigerian actress and filmmaker Funke Akindele has credited Hollywood producer and director Tyler Perry as one of the biggest influences on her filmmaking career, saying his work helped shape her understanding of storytelling and scriptwriting despite having no formal training in film production.
The record-breaking filmmaker said she developed her skills by closely studying films, attending workshops and gaining practical experience over the years, stressing that continuous learning has been central to her growth in Nigeria’s movie industry.
According to Brandspur Brand News, Akindele said she has never been embarrassed by her humble beginnings, noting that learning from accomplished professionals is a natural part of every creative journey. She explained that observing Perry’s productions played a significant role in helping her build confidence and develop her own storytelling style.
The actress added that while she initially drew inspiration from established filmmakers, she gradually refined her craft through experience and education before discovering her own creative voice. She said the learning process continues because personal and professional development never truly ends.
Akindele also expressed satisfaction that many emerging filmmakers now regard her work as a source of inspiration, describing the exchange of knowledge between generations of creatives as essential to the growth of the film industry.
Reflecting on the period leading to the release of her blockbuster film Battle on Buka Street, the filmmaker disclosed that financial constraints prevented her from hiring a public relations team to promote the project.
Instead, she relied on her brother and a small support team to create promotional content using available resources. She explained that with limited funds, she purchased costumes, produced branded merchandise and collaborated with TikTok dance influencers to generate online interest in the movie.
The strategy proved successful, helping the film gain widespread attention and eventually become one of Nigeria’s biggest box office successes. Akindele said the experience reinforced the importance of creativity, resilience and resourcefulness in overcoming challenges within the entertainment industry.
Widely recognised as one of Nollywood’s most successful filmmakers, Akindele has consistently encouraged aspiring creatives to embrace continuous learning, remain committed to developing their skills and avoid being discouraged by difficult beginnings.
Her latest reflections underscore the growing influence of mentorship, self-development and digital marketing in Nigeria’s evolving film industry, where filmmakers increasingly combine storytelling talent with innovative promotional strategies to reach wider audiences.
