X, formerly known as Twitter, has retired its Creator Revenue Sharing programme and begun rolling out a new monetisation system that will reward creators for producing original content on the platform.

The social media company ended earnings under the previous programme on September 7, 2026, while access for existing participants to apply for its new Original Content Rewards Programme began rolling out on September 8. Creators who earned money under the former scheme are expected to receive their final payout for earnings accrued through September 7 on or around September 11.

Unlike the previous arrangement, the new programme places greater emphasis on content personally created by users, including posts, articles, videos and images that demonstrate their own ideas, expertise, experiences or creativity. Brandspur Brand News reports that the change could be particularly significant for creators who have built audiences around original reporting, analysis, commentary and other distinctive material.

Under the new system, eligible creators will earn based on qualified impressions generated by their original content. X defines these as unique impressions from Premium subscribers on the Home Timeline where at least half of the post is visible. Duplicate impressions from the same account, paid or promoted views, artificially generated traffic and fraudulent impressions will not count towards earnings.

The platform has also drawn a clearer line around what qualifies as original work. Copied material, minimally altered posts, aggregated content with little added perspective and cross-platform reposts made by someone other than the original creator will not generate qualified impressions under the programme. Commentary and analysis can, however, qualify when creators add a genuine perspective or meaningful context.

Creators seeking admission must be at least 18 years old, operate an account in good standing and live in a country where the programme is available. They must also maintain an active X Premium, Premium+ or Premium Business subscription, have at least 500 verified followers and record a minimum of 500,000 Home Timeline impressions from verified users within the previous 90 days.

Meeting those requirements does not automatically guarantee admission. Eligible creators are required to submit an application, which X says it will review before determining whether an account can participate.

Existing Revenue Sharing members who have already completed identity verification and connected a valid payout method will not need to repeat those steps when moving to the new programme. Creators whose monetisation has been paused because of previous policy violations are currently ineligible to enrol.

Nigeria is among the countries where the Original Content Rewards Programme is available, opening the revised monetisation system to eligible Nigerian creators. For users outside the United States, payouts are processed through Stripe after the required identity verification and payout account have been completed.

Payments under the new programme are scheduled every two weeks, provided creators and their content continue to satisfy X’s requirements. The minimum payout is $30.

The shift means creators who previously relied on X’s Revenue Sharing programme will have to meet the new requirements and secure approval if they want to continue earning directly from their content. It also signals a stronger push by the platform to financially favour original work over reposted or lightly modified material.
