Argentina could face disciplinary action from FIFA after players displayed a banner referencing the Falkland Islands during celebrations following their 2-1 victory over England, a result that secured the defending champions a place in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final.
The post-match celebration has drawn attention because FIFA regulations prohibit political messages or demonstrations at tournaments organised by the world football governing body, raising the prospect of disciplinary proceedings against the Argentine Football Association or members of the team.
According to Brandspur Brand News, Argentina came from behind to defeat England after Anthony Gordon gave the Three Lions the lead early in the second half. Lionel Messi inspired the comeback by providing assists for Enzo Fernández and Lautaro Martínez, whose goals booked Argentina’s place in the tournament’s final.
Following the final whistle in Atlanta, several Argentina players celebrated with a banner bearing the inscription, “Las Malvinas son Argentinas,” a statement asserting Argentina’s claim over the Falkland Islands, known in Argentina as Las Malvinas.
The slogan refers to the long-running sovereignty dispute between Argentina and the United Kingdom over the Falkland Islands. The issue remains politically sensitive, particularly because of the 1982 Falklands War, during which both countries suffered significant military casualties.
FIFA’s disciplinary framework generally prohibits political, ideological or religious statements during competitions under its control, with the governing body maintaining that football should remain free from political demonstrations at official events.
Should FIFA determine that the banner breached its competition regulations, the governing body could open disciplinary proceedings to assess whether sanctions against the team or its football federation are warranted.
Argentina’s victory also extended the country’s title defence, with Messi once again playing a decisive role as the reigning world champions advanced to another World Cup final after overcoming England in one of the tournament’s most anticipated knockout fixtures.
Attention will now shift to FIFA’s response to the incident as Argentina prepare for the World Cup final, where the team will seek to retain the global title while awaiting any decision regarding the post-match celebration.
