More quickly than at any other point in recorded history, the earth is warming. Already, a surge of extreme weather, including droughts and floods, is being unleashed by this rapid climate change, impacting not only Nigeria but the entire world.
The Earthshot Prize was created and introduced in 2020 as a part of initiatives to combat extreme climate change and promote the creation of solutions. Since then, 45 winners and finalists have received £50 million in support from the program, in addition to £15 million in prize money.
The Earthshot movement has a strong emphasis on connecting, inspiring, and spreading awareness. The pan-African entertainment group, MultiChoice Africa has partnered with The Earthshot Prize on media broadcasting to guarantee effect on a continental scale. The cooperation aims to promote creative concepts that propel environmental transformation and expedite the creation of sustainable remedies. With 21.8 million households in 50 countries served by MultiChoice, the company is ideally positioned to raise awareness of climate change in communities and to promote and highlight creative solutions.
MultiChoice, a member of The Earthshot Prize Global Alliance, has used the MTF’s creative resources to produce documentary content that bolsters the Earthshot message. MultiChoice Africa is showcasing African changemakers addressing the most critical global issues and raising awareness of the need for environmental action through the dozens of MTF filmmakers who graduate from the program each year throughout Africa.
The MTF program provides extensive, fully-funded cinematography courses to 60 young graduate filmmakers annually at its three academies in Lagos, Nairobi, and Lusaka. To spread the word about ecology and climate-conscious living, which are essential to maintaining the earth safe for human existence, MTF students have produced several Earthshot documentaries.

In the documentary short film Revive The Ocean, director Marilyn E. Arko-Baisie and producer Winner Achimugu collaborated to highlight the efforts being made by NGOs and community organisations to change the world. They spoke to Oyewole Talabi of Recycle9ja, an initiative to collect plastics, and Doyinsola Ogunye, the founder of Sea Turtle Sanctuary. Agharese Lucia Onaghise tells how the secret to reducing waste is in developing items for recyclability, while Achenye Idachabasbaro of MitiMeth outlines the method of upcycling garbage to increase product lifespans.
In the film R.A.T. – Race Against Time, organisers and locals who deal with severe plastic pollution are interviewed while visiting two seaside towns in Lagos, Nigeria. Thecla Uzozi, assistant producer, Prince Isaac Effiong, director Anjola Aluko, and co-director Ayodeji M. Lawson explore the intricacies of these villages, one of which is constructed on a bedrock of plastic waste that serves as a flood barrier.
Robert Swan offers this sobering comment as the movie comes to a close: “The greatest threat to our planet is the belief that someone else will save us.”
The producers of the short film 2070, Morenikeji Uka and Adejo “Story Priest” Emmanuel, Oluwayanmife Arogundade, and assistant director Omotola Oke, often known as “T-Basz,” handle climate change dramatically.
The narrative revolves around a teenager tasked with imagining what the world might look like in 2070. Her lived experience of garbage pollution and constant flooding causes her to provide a pessimistic evaluation, while her classmates envision a world of flying automobiles.
According to her: “Everyone is responsible for the environment. And if we do nothing about climate change, we rob our children of a safe future.”
Through its cooperation with the Earthshot Prize, MultiChoice is educating young people about the importance of sustainability, showcasing innovative projects, and motivating more African youth to fight for the future of their continent. The MTF filmmakers are raising awareness of climate change among the next generation of young African leaders by emphasising environmental consciousness and presenting the heroes of the sustainability movement.
