At the 30th Nigerian Economic Summit (NES30), Google convened leading CEOs, government representatives, and business executives to promote Nigeria’s digital economy and assist companies dealing with economic challenges.
The roundtable, which had its theme “Leveraging Digital Solutions to Navigate Economic Volatility,” generated lively debates about how digital technology may enable companies to not only endure but also prosper in the face of the country’s economic difficulties.
Nigeria offers both enormous potential and difficult obstacles as it prepares for major economic change. Nigeria is positioned to lead Africa in digital innovation because of its young, vibrant population and quickly expanding the IT sector. Increasing productivity, raising living standards, and stimulating economic growth all depend on digital transformation. According to research, the Nigerian economy generates $8 for every $1 spent on digital technology, highlighting the enormous benefits of embracing digital transformation.
The roundtable, which took place on October 16, 2024, included prominent individuals like Laoye Jaiyeola, the former CEO of the Nigerian Economic Summit Group, and Taiwo Oyedele, the chairman of the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms. They emphasized how crucial cross-sector cooperation is to advance the cause.
The talks began with findings from an Africa Practice CEO survey, which showed that 46% of companies reported revenue drops as a result of macroeconomic pressures and inflation. However, 70% of company executives are actively seeking digital solutions to innovate, adapt, and support future expansion despite these obstacles.
This extensive use of digital technologies shows how eager Nigerian companies are to embrace technology as a game-changer. Adoption is nevertheless hampered by a lack of funding, inadequate infrastructure, and restricted access to foreign exchange. Nevertheless, roundtable leaders pledged to take action in addition to outlining the difficulties. To facilitate digital transformation, government leaders promised to expedite the digitisation of public services, enhance interagency cooperation, and remove financial obstacles. In the meantime, Google pledged to investigate regional payment options via collaborations, guaranteeing increased availability of digital resources for companies throughout Nigeria.
Leaders in the industry reaffirmed the private sector’s contribution to this change, stressing the need for close collaboration with the government and the need to invest in digital skills development and technology to address the talent gap, BrandSpur technology and information news reports.
The head of the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms, Taiwo Oyedele, said: “I’m excited about forums like this between Private and Public sector because of the opportunity to hear from one another and ideate. I’m a firm believer in working together because the private sector cannot thrive without carrying along the public sector. Digital transformation should be mobilised within government as foundationary and by beginning this dialogue and continuing momentum, we can achieve a true shift in how Nigeria operates, with a digital first mindset.”
Former Nigerian Economic Summit Group CEO, Laoye Jaiyeola emphasised: “Policy formation is only as effective as the effort behind it. Over the years, we’ve seen businesses engage briefly but move on if there’s no immediate solution. The NESG, through its Digital Economy Policy Commission, provides a platform for the private sector to make meaningful contributions in advancing digital solutions.”
Google’s West Africa Director, Olumide Balogun, emphasised the value of teamwork by saying: “Technology holds the power to transform lives and economies. We believe that by working together—across government, business, and communities—we can unlock the immense potential that Nigeria’s digital economy holds for the future.”
Continuing, the potential of artificial intelligence (AI) as a major engine of economic expansion was also covered in the conversation. To ensure that innovation is inclusive and advantageous to all Nigerians, Google reaffirmed the significance of a responsible and ethical framework for AI deployment.
A consensus on Nigeria’s digital future was reached at the end of the discussion. All participants approved the session declaration, which provides a blueprint for the nation’s digital economy’s future expansion and demonstrates a strong commitment on the part of the public and commercial sectors to transform obstacles into opportunities.
