In the first half (H1) of 2024, the video-sharing app TikTok achieved a noteworthy milestone of 488.2 million downloads, the second-highest figure since its debut eight years ago, according to current data provided to BrandSpur digital news platform by OnlyAccount.io.

TikTok was developed by ByteDance in September 2016 and has seen remarkable quarterly growth in the number of new users. Its popularity hasn’t decreased despite sporadic setbacks brought on by data privacy issues and a possible ban in the US, which is its second-largest market. Rather, the number of downloads on the platform has continuously increased amazingly.

According to data from Statista and AppMagic, the video-sharing app received over 2.2 million downloads in the first half of 2023 and 488.2 million in the first half of 2024. After 2020—still a record year for TikTok downloads—this is the second-largest H1 statistic.

TikTok was downloaded 605.4 million times globally between January and June 2020. Downloads fell by a staggering 37% to 381 million in H1 2021, but they swiftly rebounded and have been increasing ever since. According to statistics, there were 415.2 million downloads in the first half of 2022 and 488.2 million in the first half of 2023.

According to the data, TikTok has surpassed 5.7 billion lifetime downloads worldwide on both the iOS and Android platforms, with downloads continuing to increase over the last three months. Together with social media behemoths Facebook and Instagram, this enormous milestone places the video-sharing platform among the most downloaded apps globally.
