Meta Unveils The World’s Longest Subsea Cable Project

Project Waterworth, the world’s longest undersea cable project, would cover more than 50,000 kilometres and reach five main continents. The multinational technology giant Meta has formally revealed what it describes as its most ambitious subsea cable endeavour to date.

According to Meta, it will make use of the most capacious technology available. Connectivity to the US, India, Brazil, South Africa, and other important regions will be provided by Project Waterworth.

According to the company, the opening of three new oceanic corridors with the plentiful, fast connectivity required to propel AI innovation globally would enhance the scope and dependability of the global digital highways. This will require an expenditure of several billion dollars spread over several years.

However, as the Data Centre Dynamics website notes, precise route information, prices, and schedules have not yet been made public.

According to Meta, the project shows how it is advancing engineering design to retain cable robustness, which allowed it to construct the world’s longest 24-fibre pair cable project and increase deployment speed overall. To prevent damage from ship anchors and other risks, Meta says it is also implementing first-of-its-kind routing, maximizing the cable laid in deep water — at depths of up to 7,000 meters — and employing enhanced burial procedures in high-risk fault zones, such as shallow waters close to the coast.

Following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the US, the Indian press extensively reported the announcement as part of their coverage of the recent US-India Joint Leaders’ Statement, which included Meta’s news.

While the Joint Leaders’ Statement available to BrandSpur digital news brand was reported to emphasize India’s plans to engage in undersea cable maintenance and finance in the Indian Ocean using reliable vendors, Business Today suggested that this cable investment highlights Meta’s focus on India’s expanding digital landscape.
