On Wednesday, February 19, 2025, 15-year-old Ikenna Ikechukwu took on the job of CEO at MTN Nigeria for a day, demonstrating an impressive combination of academic success and business acumen.
BrandSpur telecom and information news desk reports that after winning the 2024 MTN mPulse Spelling Bee, the student from Rivers State’s Glorious Covenant School deserved this incredible opportunity.
Ugonwa Nwonye, Chief Customer Relations and Experience Officer gave Ikechukwu a hearty welcome at MTN Plaza in Falomo, Lagos, to start his day leading one of Africa’s biggest telecom firms. His itinerary was jam-packed with high-level business events, such as attending a press conference and chairing an executive committee meeting, interacting with MTNners from various departments, and touring the MTN Aromire service centre.
Dr. Karl Toriola, the departing CEO of MTN Nigeria for the day, highlighted the company’s dedication to developing young talent during the handover by praising Ikechukwu’s intelligence and tenacity.
According to him: “Today, I’m handing over the reins of MTN Nigeria to you. This is a reward for your achievement, but just the beginning of greater things ahead.”
Ikechukwu’s ascent to the CEO’s chair started in November 2024, when he won a spelling bee competition and beat around 40,000 kids across the country. When he accurately spelt “Cornucopia” in just six seconds, he won a scholarship worth 5 million and other rewards. He spoke about his experience and conveyed his thanks and awe.
He had this to say as a blueprint to other aspiring young Nigerians: “I am excited about the Spelling Bee initiative that has become a major platform for young people to shine. I never thought I would become the CEO of MTN Nigeria, but here I am as the CEO for a day.
“Young people like me are growing up in a time when access to digital tools can shape careers, unlock opportunities, and even determine the next global innovators. The mPulse platform is a perfect example of how digital access transforms learning. With its educational resources, quizzes, and competitions, MTN is empowering students across Nigeria to think bigger and reach further,” he added.
Driving discussions about significant digital solutions was the main goal under Ikenna’s direction. He said: “We’re in a digital era, and it’s important to lead conversations around technology that truly makes an impact. By using digital tools with the power of data, we can inspire creativity and shape a better future.”
As part of its larger commitment to education and youth empowerment, MTN Nigeria’s creative “CEO for a Day” program seeks to expose young achievers to real-world leadership situations. This program affirms that, with the correct encouragement and opportunities, today’s kids can become tomorrow’s leaders.
