Safaricom Debuts New Mobile Plans For Boda Boda Passengers, Drivers In Kenya

Two new mobile plans from Safaricom have been introduced especially for Kenyan boda boda passengers and drivers who work for online ride-hailing services. These plans combine connectivity with a number of safety and financial advantages. The new plans, named ‘Ofa Ya Boda Boda’ and ‘Bundle Ya Deree’, are a strategic move by the telco to address the unique operational challenges faced by the country’s massive transport gig economy.

A key data feature of the new service is that drivers and passengers who sign up will receive free access to necessary ride-hailing and navigation apps. This eliminates a significant annoyance and ongoing expense for individuals who depend on these tools for their livelihood: using apps like Google Maps or their particular taxi apps won’t use data from their main bundle. In addition to the data, Safaricom has incorporated a number of value-added services to enhance the operators’ financial stability and general well-being. The packages directly address the high risks associated with their work by providing subsidized insurance coverage against illness, accidents, and loss of income.

Additionally, fuel savings are planned for drivers enrolled in the “Bundle Ya Dere” plan. To help offset the rising cost of fuel, these drivers will soon be eligible for discounts on Shell FuelSave Unleaded and V-Power every Friday through a partnership with Vivo Energy Kenya, the operators of Shell fuel stations, BrandSpur information and technology news desk reports.

According to Vivo Energy Kenya’s Retail Manager, Patrick Masinde: “We understand the challenges faced by Kenyans in the transport sector, especially with the rising cost of operations. Through our partnership with Safaricom, we aim to ease this burden.”

Continuing, through its “Safire Connect” forums, Safaricom is also offering financial and digital literacy training on subjects like road safety, digital skills, and entrepreneurship. With this action, the company is aiming to reach a vital sector of the Kenyan economy.

However, the 2025 Economic Survey from the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) estimates that in 2024, the transportation sector contributed 4.4% of the nation’s GDP. With more than 1.4 million motorcycles registered, the boda boda industry alone supports over a million direct jobs and brings in an estimated KES 1 billion every day.

Fawzia Ali-Kimanthi, Chief Consumer Business Officer at Safaricom PLC, had this to say: “Our purpose is to transform lives.”

The new plans are intended to give this crucial industry financial tools, safety measures, and connectivity. Beyond merely being a network provider, Safaricom is establishing itself as a complete partner for transport operators by fusing connectivity with useful, cost-saving advantages like fuel savings and necessary insurance.

Online taxi drivers can sign up for “Bundle Ya Dere” by dialing *544*6#, while boda boda passengers can access the new plan by dialing *544*8#.
