Showmax has introduced a new payment solution for Nigerian subscribers through a strategic partnership with Baxi by Onafriq, making it easier for users to subscribe, renew and manage their streaming plans without relying on cards or traditional banking channels.

The move is aimed at simplifying access to digital entertainment, especially for customers who prefer mobile wallets, agent networks and alternative payment platforms. With the integration, users can now complete their Showmax subscription payments directly within the Baxi by Onafriq app.

The update supports all major Showmax packages, including Showmax Mobile, Showmax All Devices, Showmax Premier League Mobile, and bundled entertainment and sports plans. Subscribers can log into the Baxi app, select their preferred Showmax plan and pay instantly, removing the need for multiple steps or external platforms.

For existing users, the process allows seamless top-ups through the app or via Baxi’s nationwide POS agent network. Once funds are loaded, subscribers can activate or renew their Showmax plans immediately. New users can also sign up easily by creating a Showmax account, verifying their phone number and completing payment through the Baxi platform.

The development reflects a broader industry push towards financial inclusion and digital convenience, as more Nigerians rely on mobile-based solutions for everyday transactions.

Brandspur observes that partnerships like this are becoming increasingly important as streaming platforms compete not only on content but also on accessibility. By embedding payment options into platforms Nigerians already use, brands are lowering barriers to entry and strengthening customer loyalty in a price-sensitive market.

Commenting on the initiative, MultiChoice’s Executive Head of Marketing for West Africa, Tope Oshunkeye, said the goal is to remove friction from the subscription process and make premium entertainment easier to access for everyone.

Onafriq’s Managing Director for Anglophone West Africa, Mxolisi Msutwana, also noted that the collaboration is designed to encourage wider adoption of digital payments while improving the customer experience for entertainment lovers.

The partnership positions Showmax more strongly in Nigeria’s competitive streaming market, where affordability, ease of payment and local relevance play a major role in customer retention.

With more consumers shifting towards on-demand digital services, Showmax’s integration with Baxi by Onafriq is expected to support wider reach, especially among users who prefer agent-assisted transactions or mobile wallets over debit cards.

The streaming platform continues to expand its footprint across Africa, using local partnerships to adapt to market realities while delivering global content and regional originals to a growing audience.
