The Coca-Cola Company has reinforced its global brand protection strategy by extending the trademark rights for its iconic contour bottle, securing exclusive ownership of the design for another decade.
Trademark records confirm that the globally recognised bottle shape will now remain legally protected until December 11, 2035, following a successful renewal by the beverage giant. The trademark, which applies exclusively to soft drink products, has been under continuous protection for nearly five decades.
First submitted for registration in December 1975 and formally approved in July 1976, the contour bottle has remained one of Coca-Cola’s most valuable intellectual property assets. The most recent renewal replaced the previous protection window scheduled to expire in December 2025.
Brandspur Brand News understands that the trademark is registered under a single category within the International Classification of Goods and Services, covering non-alcoholic soft drinks. This ensures that the bottle’s distinctive silhouette cannot be replicated by competitors within the beverage space.
Beyond its commercial value, Coca-Cola’s contour bottle has transcended packaging to become a cultural symbol. Its unmistakable curves are instantly recognisable worldwide and have influenced creative expression across art, fashion, advertising, and architectural design.
Analysts note that the renewed protection reflects Coca-Cola’s broader commitment to preserving the visual elements that define its identity in a crowded global market. In an era of rapid product imitation, safeguarding such a distinctive design remains central to the company’s brand equity strategy.
The contour bottle continues to serve not only as a packaging solution but also as a visual shorthand for the Coca-Cola brand itself, reinforcing consumer trust, familiarity, and emotional connection across generations.
By extending the trademark to 2035, Coca-Cola has ensured that one of the most iconic designs in commercial history remains exclusively its own for years to come.
